Holiday Scams are Just Around the Corner

NOVEMBER 2024

'Tis the Season for Scams

From the desk of Hamilton County Prosecuting Attorney Melissa Powers

Dear neighbors,

Staying connected to law enforcement has been critical during my time as Hamilton County Prosecutor.

Recently, Forest Park Police contacted me about a victim scammed of $13,000 in cryptocurrency and cash. It was part of an elaborate "grandparents' scam" involving a fake prosecutor, fake police, a fake granddaughter, and even an unsuspecting Lyft driver.

Forest Park Police are now investigating the crime.

I want you to remember: if you get a phone call from a family member saying they are in trouble, always take the time to hang up and verify the call. You're not being rude. A simple check could save you thousands of dollars and keep you safe from crime.

Always fighting for you,

Melissa Powers

OTHER HOLIDAY TIPS TO KEEP YOU SAFE FROM SCAMS

  • Be Cautious with Personal Information: Avoid sharing personal information over the phone or online unless you are sure of the recipient’s identity. Scammers often use holiday offers and fake charities to trick people into revealing sensitive information.

  • Secure Online Shopping: Make sure to shop on reputable websites. Look for HTTPS in the URL, which indicates a secure connection, and use strong, unique passwords for online accounts.

  • Verify Before Donating: Before donating to a charity, verify its legitimacy through trusted sources like the Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving Alliance or Charity Navigator. Scammers often create fake charities to exploit holiday generosity.

  • Be Wary of Unsolicited Communications: Be cautious of unsolicited phone calls, emails, or text messages, especially those requesting personal information or immediate payment. If something seems suspicious, it’s best to hang up or delete the message.

  • Stay Connected with Family and Friends: Regularly communicate with trusted family members and friends about any unusual interactions or financial activities. They can provide support and help identify potential scams.
