If you want to be a high performer and stand out among your colleagues and competition how will you differentiate yourself?  How will you know if you are shining with great work or just performing at the "okay" level whereby others will be identified for promotions or selected as the provider of choice?  Below is a short management exercise to help you envision what you may have overlooked so that you can create a new strategy poised for results.

The purpose of this tool is to test possible scenarios to great work goals by playing them out in a story.

1. Think about the key idea that you want to develop in a way that everything works out great. Tell that story to someone or write it down with as much detail as possible. Who is involved? What will happen? What steps are necessary? Who will it affect? What is the happy ending?

2. Next tell the story imagining that everything goes wrong and the ending is very unhappy. What could happen? Who will be affected? How will you feel? What will happen to the organization?

3. Then tell the story again from the vantage point of the initiative not being a huge success or a disaster. Everything just sort of worked out okay but nothing strategic was accomplished.

All three of these scenarios provide insight.  In the best case scenario there is key strategy and a great work plan.  The worst case scenario shows danger spots and challenges.  The middle-of-the-road scenario shows what will happen if you fail to achieve "great" work and the initiative just concludes without the desired outcome - perhaps just an "okay" level of work.  Most initiatives fail to achieve "great" status because the dedication and plan were not in place from the start.
