"Your career is the treasury of your life" - Joanne Meehl

July is high summer in most of the US, with July 4th, America’s birthday, as a high point.
Normally in this space, I urge you to do something with your career or job search.

But not this month: Instead, take time off so you can recharge. Time off from your regular whatever. To replenish, refresh, refill. Enjoy!

You are allowed to do this: kick back, relax, take time off
If you don’t recharge, you’ll burn out
If you’re a driven kind of person who likes to achieve goals and create new ones, it’s easy to overlook "taking care of yourself" while hard-charging ahead.

I’ve even known successful people who resent summer because it’s more laid back than the rest of the year and they don’t want to let up their pace!

So this month’s main article is simple collection of quotes (see below) about treating yourself well, relaxing, slowing down, even stopping for a bit. Why? Simple: Because you need it. And it feels great!

So truly relish and enjoy that run or walk, or painting that watercolor (been too long, right?!), or letting your legs and feet dangle in the pool, or that peak-of-summer ice cream cone.

Here are the quotes:

We will be more successful in all our endeavors if we can let go of the habit of running all the time, and take little pauses to relax and re-center ourselves. And we’ll also have a lot more joy in living. - Thich Nhat Hanh

Time passes so fast. Make time to be still. - Lialah Gifty Akita

The main thing to do is relax and let your talent do all the work. - Charles Barkley

We need time to defuse, to contemplate. Just as in sleep when our brains relax and give us dreams, so at some time in the day we need to disconnect, reconnect, and look around us. - Laurie Colwin

The wise rest at least as hard as they work. - Mokokoma Mokhonoana

Don’t post your resume online!

This month’s Tip from Joanne:
Don’t wait until you have an interview before getting ready for an interview!
Oh, the panicked calls I get from people who say, "I’ve finally landed an interview but OMG, I don’t know how to do one!"

Doing interview prep squeezed in the day before an interview, when you haven’t done an interview in years, and when you’re working and trying to fit everything into your busy day, is not the best plan.

Plus, employers don't always give a lot of notice for interviews today. "Can you come in tomorrow?" is what you will often hear.

Yes, "interview prep" is a service I provide, regardless of where you live, but whether it’s with me or another coach, get practice WAY AHEAD of when you think you’ll be landing interviews. That way, all you’ll need to do before the actual interview is "tweak" your preparation or add in some more time reviewing your success stories. And that will feel great and that confidence will show during your interview!
Thought for the Month

Life is the most difficult exam. Most people copy others, not realizing that everyone has a different question paper.
