Dear Supporter,
Most of us will never have to worry about becoming homeless. For many, our only experience of homelessness is seeing a person living on the street or curled up in a sleeping bag at the entrance to a building–common sights in San Francisco. But homelessness doesn’t always look like tents under the 13th Street overpass or lined up on the sidewalks in the Tenderloin.
For the young people in Bayview Hunters Point, homelessness can be a teen couch surfing, sleeping on a friend's floor, or having some kind of temporary “shelter” but never a home. San Francisco's 2022 point-in-time (PIT) count shows that 15% of the youth experiencing homelessness live in Bayview Hunters Point. That’s 160 youth living on the street in our own backyard.
However, the PIT count doesn't capture youths sleeping on floors and couches. Considering those young people, the number of youth experiencing homelessness in Bayview Hunters Point is likely around 1600. While we are grateful they have temporary roofs over their heads, what happens when the couch suddenly becomes unavailable? Or their temporary “shelter” disappears?
Our Keys to the Future campaign responds to those questions. Launching today, Keys to the Future will run until midnight on 12/31/23, with all donations going toward finding permanent homes for Bayview Hunters Point's young and unhoused. Before youth can live up to their immense potential, they need a place to call home. With your help, we can make that possible.
Here's how your donation can make a difference:
