April 2022
A Note from our Executive Director

Dear friend,

How can YOU prevent child abuse? April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Though really, why just one month?
Shouldn’t we work to prevent child abuse every month of the year?

IVYP is what we call a “primary prevention” organization. Primary prevention is the prevention you don’t see, because if we are successful, we keep child abuse from happening. How do we do it? We work deliberately to strengthen the bonds between children and the adults who care for them, to mitigate family stress by connecting families to the services they need, and to improve parent skills by providing classes and plenty of opportunities for meaningful relationships. In fact, relationship is at the heart of everything we do.

It’s no surprise that healthy relationships are the single most important predictor of resilience in the face of adversity. So, this April – and every month – you can work to deepen your relationships. Ask a child a question, and really listen to their answer. Call a friend to whom you haven’t spoken in a while. Celebrate and honor healthy relationships.

Please join me (virtually) on Thursday, May 12 at 4:00 PM at our third annual LEAP awards. The event is FREE and you can attend from the comfort of your phone or computer. And, you’ll end your day feeling great and connected. RSVP HERE.

Name Change Update: We’re getting close! After hearing from students, clients, employees, partners, and community members, we know that we need a name that honors our history in Isla Vista and connects us to our future growth. Our new name should symbolize connection and relationship. We have some ideas. If you’d like a sneak preview, email me and I’ll happily chat with you about our thoughts.

Staff Spotlight

"I love everything about my job. Seeing the children and watching them grow and achieve all of their milestones and accomplishments."

Harvest of the Month

Each month we share a healthy, easy and affordable recipe to try that highlights ingredients you can get at our food distribution and free farm stand. This month we are highlighting celery root. Did you know that all parts of the celery plant are edible? Celery is a great source of Vitamin K, and the stalk consists of about 95% water. We love this recipe because it's delicious and can be made in 1 hour or less!

Oops! - Let us correct something
In last month's issue we shared about our vaccine clinics and the impact they have had on the community. We mistakenly shared that this is a partnership with Cottage Hospital when in fact, it is a partnership with Santa Barbara County Public Health. Our apologies!
Get Involved with IVYP
IVYP needs your support as we work hard to support our community in the wake of COVID-19. We’ve stepped up and we need your help to continue. Please consider a donation to IVYP’s COVID-19 Response Fund to help us continue to provide the caring, proactive and flexible support our community needs.
Be a diaper champion by sponsoring the cost of diapers for local families. Diapers are one of the most consistent requests from our families at our FRC. Disposable diapers can cost as much as $100 per month per baby so every contribution makes a big difference.
Did you know that many of our most vulnerable students don’t have a dedicated place at home to do their school work? IVYP will purchase and distribute folding desks to any GUSD student who has a need through our new Study Table Fund. To support this effort click here to donate.
