What to sow and grow in in March.
Now we're at the start of spring we can add a few more things to last months list of what to sow. We can include some of the summer season veggies like Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Peppers, Chillies and Aubergines. These will need the warmth, so best starting them off indoors on a sunny windowsill where you should get better results.
So we can still do the more hardy veg like Turnips, Kale, Spinach, Spring Onions, Peas, Lettuce, Cauliflower, Radish and most herbs. We can then add Purple Sprouting Broccoli, early Cabbage, Kohlrabi, Beetroots, Celery, Onions, Florence Fennel and Celeriac.
I would hold off from sowing things like Sweetcorn, all types of Beans and summer and winter Squash until next month. You can however plant your first early Potatoes in a couple of weeks. Keep in mind that we can still have a night time frost right up until the middle of May. You'll probably have to keep your eye out for your new young Potato shoots breaking through the compost and get them fleeced over to protect the new leaves from the chilly nights.
Most herbs can be sown now in March. I plan to do some Sage and Oregano this year that I've not done before along with some more Chives. I have to confess that I grow Chives more for the lovely blue flowers rather than to eat the leaves.
If your soil is warm enough, you might want to sow some early Carrots. Varieties like Early Nantes or Flyaway are good ones to start with. Carrots have to be sown direct into the soil where they are to grow, as they hate being transplanted. Broad Beans, like Carrots, are also good to sow directly into the ground now. One other veg you'll want to direct sow is Parsnips, but in my experience they are best left until late April or even May when the soil has really warmed up.
