You had a lot to say about your neighborhoods! Here's what we've heard.
The first of five phases of the Near Southeast Area Planning Process has come to a close! A big thank you goes to each of the hundreds of participants who shared their thoughts on the neighborhoods of Goldsmith, Indian Creek, University Hills North, Virginia Village, and Washington Virginia Vale.

Whether taking the online survey, attending the virtual community kickoff or talking with a planner in person at a neighborhood event, community members offered input that will serve as the basis for the next phase of the planning process: creating a long-term vision for the future of these neighborhoods.

So what should the future look like?

  • Improved commercial corridors, particularly Evans Avenue, with better design, walkability, and shopping, dining, and entertainment options
  • Better and safer mobility options for all modes
  • More diverse and affordable housing options
  • Preserved and improved parks, trails, green spaces, and landscaping

Along with these broad themes, here is a quick glance at community input in several topic areas. Click to see full size.
Other key resources on the project webpage
Along with the summary of what we heard from the community, the Near Southeast Area Plan webpage has been updated to include a recap of outreach done during the kickoff phase of the plan, as well as a community engagement strategy informed by your input (PDF).

Also available are numerous resources the planning team has put together to help inform the plan and the planning process. These documents include studies on:
Next Steps
For the rest of the year, the planning team will be transitioning to the next phase of the planning process, which will involve finalizing the engagement strategy, developing draft vision statements, identifying issues and opportunities the plan should address, and developing draft recommendations.

More opportunities to participate will be available early in 2022, so stay tuned!
About the Near Southeast Area Plan
The Near Southeast Planning Area is made up of the neighborhoods of Washington Virginia Vale, Virginia Village, Indian Creek, Goldsmith and the area of University Hills north of Yale Avenue. It includes a variety of housing types, significant commercial corridors including Colorado Boulevard and Leetsdale Drive, and amenities like sections of the Cherry Creek Greenway and the Highline Canal. Several major redevelopment projects in the area have highlighted the need to work with the community to update outdated neighborhood plans or provide planning guidance in areas where no neighborhood plan exists. As part of the Neighborhood Planning Initiative, this project provides an opportunity to create a long-term vision for these neighborhoods that furthers citywide goals and priorities while addressing local neighborhood needs.
