MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

November 27, 2023

Later this week we’ll host another one of my favorite events! Our Chamber Leadership Breakfasts never disappoint and are not to be missed. It is at these breakfasts our speakers open up about themselves, key influencers in their lives, and significant events that led them to where they are today. I have enjoyed every single one of these and found value in each.

I recall hearing how Joe Purzycki was isolated from many students and faculty at Delaware State University after his hire. I appreciated learning about where Desa Burton and Colleen Perry Keith grew up, and Tony Allen’s recount of his father’s advice on how to navigate the world as a young Black man. I could go on and on because each of our speakers have shared very meaningful stories and inflection points in their own careers.

This Thursday will be no different. Skip Schoenhals will describe how he went from an early career that began in his home state of Michigan, to running the Wilmington Savings Fund Society, or WSFS, at a time when few believed the bank would survive. I read his book and encourage you to do that too. Better yet, come join us Thursday morning and hear about that and many other things that shaped Skip’s career.

News You Can Use

New home sales figures for October are out this morning and are expected to show a cooled market. On Tuesday, the Case-Shiller home price index for 20 cities is out and the September results. The November consumer confidence data is also released tomorrow. Thursday brings us October information points on personal income, pending home sales and more. We wrap up the week on Friday, December 1 with important remarks from Fed Chair Jerome Powell, November auto sales data, and October construction figures.

Earnings calls this week get rolling on Tuesday with Bank of Montreal (BMO), Intuit, Splunk, and Workday. Dollar Tree, Salesforce, Five Below, La-Z-Boy, and Petco Health and Wellness are among those scheduled for Wednesday. Ulta Beauty (my two daughters account for half of their sales!), Dell, Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD), and Zumiez are scheduled for Thursday, while Genesco wraps up the week on Friday.
