  • Backpack donations needed
A gain this year, the Western Fairfax Christian Ministries has asked us to join them in collecting backpacks for children in need when they return to school in September. We have been asked to supply 25 LARGE, NEW backpacks for students at Centreville High School. They need to be delivered to the high school by early August. Donations can be dropped off at the church office or you can bring them on Sunday and put them in the food baskets. The backpacks need to be very sturdy so they will last more than one year. (Costco has these backpacks on sale now for about $16.) We have 10 backpacks so far. Many thanks to those who donated them!

  • Exodus Movie - SHOWING SOON AT ST. JOHN'S!
St. John's will host a showing of the movie "Exodus", a 1960's movie with Paul Newman, that captures the struggle of the founding of the modern State of Israel . The movie was based on the 1958 novel Exodus by Leon Uris . As the movie is four hours, we will watch the first half on Wednesday, July 18 and the second half on July 25, starting at 6:45 PM . You can join us for the 6:00 PM service of Holy Eucharist and then watch the movie at 6:45 PM. Popcorn will be available!!!

  • Western Fairfax Christian Ministries "Stock Our Shelves" EVENT
ST. JOHN'S IS PUTTING TOGETHER A TEAM!
WFCM is hosting a "Stock Our Shelves" event at three different sites on Saturday, July 21.   They need volunteers to hand “most needed food” lists to customers at these stores, asking them to purchase one or two items from the list to donate to WFCM’s Food Pantry. After the customer shops, volunteers will collect the food, weigh it, crate/bag it for delivery at the end of the day to the pantry. They will have another group volunteering at the last shift to unload the food and put it out on the shelves. They will also need a truck or van or bus at each of the locations to put food in & deliver to the pantry.
The food drive will be held at each of the following stores on July 21, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  They need approximately 5-6 volunteers for each shift (morning and afternoon) and vehicles at these locations, and 10-15 volunteers at the food pantry for the unloading shift.
  Three-site collection:
·          Centreville – Centrewood Plaza Giant, 14125 St Germain Drive
·         Chantilly – Chantilly Walmart, 4368 Chantilly Shopping Center
·         Herndon – Franklin Farm Giant, 13330 Franklin Farm Rd
  Hours:
Collections at stores – 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., two shifts (9am-noon; noon to 3pm)
           Stocking at Food Pantry – 3:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
LET'S PUT TOGETHER A TEAM FROM ST. JOHN'S FOR THE CENTREVILLE LOCATION FROM NOON TO 3:00 pm! WE NEED 5-6 VOLUNTEERS. LET CAROL KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IF YOU CAN HELP!

  •  Death of Dr. Craig Ryder
Word was received late last week that Dr. Craig Ryder, husband of The Rev. Barbara Ryder, former assistant to the rector at St. John's, died in Georgia at the age of 81. "May his soul and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace."

  • Looking for a good movie?
Katharine Lavery highly recommends the movie "Mr. Rogers", a documentary about the life and ministry of Fred Rogers, a Presbyterian minister and star of the TV show "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood". Mr. Rogers was able to teach children Christian values by his stories and the guests he had on the show. Katharine says its a very uplifting movie.

  • Many thanks go to:
Tom McDermott for cleaning the outdoor bell tower and the bench.
David Weir for overseeing the replacement of the air conditioner (arriving at 6:00 AM and staying through the day) as well as being the sexton on many weekends when we are shorthanded.

  • Nursery help needed
Our nursery supervisor, Gluay Zimmerman, will be away on July 22, August 5 and August 12. We would like to have a volunteer to staff the nursery each of those Sundays. Can you help? Please tell Carol as soon as possible.

SUNDAY SERVICE

We can prepare our hearts & minds by reading ahead
for the Sunday Service lessons.

The Eighth Sunday
after Pentecost

July 15, 2018
9:30 AM

 The First Reading: 2 Samuel 6:1-5, 12b-19
Imagine the immense joy which King David felt as he walked with the symbol of God's presence, the ark, leading it into the city of Jerusalem. To be so close to God and to usher the ark into the city is a great victory and the fulfillment of prophecy.

The Psalm: 24

The Epistle: Ephesians 1:3-14
Freedom rests in realizing that all we have and all we will be and all we can see is all a blessing from God. It is in this realization that our freedom to serve finds its foundation.

The Gospel: Mark 6:14-29
King Herod was unwilling to sacrifice his reputation for the life of his friend, John the Baptist.

DIOCESE
THE GENERAL CONVENTION OF THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH, JULY 5-13
The General Convention, which meets every three years, will be held in Austin, Texas from July 5-13. Four clergy and four lay delegates from every diocese makes up the House of Deputies. The bishops meet separately in the House of Bishops. Much of the legislation must pass both houses before it is approved, much like our Congress. Our delegates, who were elected at our Diocesan Convention, are: (clergy) The Rev. Lucia Lloyd, The Rev. Dr. Robert Pritchard, The Rev. Randy Alexander, and The Rev. Justin McIntosh. The Lay Delegates are: J.P. Causey, Cynthia Bartol, Russell Randle and Helen Spence. Our bishops will be attending as well. To find out more about General Convention, please CLICK HERE You can also subscribe to the "Center Aisle", which is an online publication put out daily during General Convention by the Diocese of Virginia. Please keep all our delegates and bishops in your prayers as they travel to Austin this week and discuss resolutions to enhance the ministry of the Episcopal Church.

Evening Community Classes for Fall
Weeknights, September 10 - November 24, 7:30 - 9:30 p.m.
How does being Anglican inform us as voters? Why and how does the Church take positions on “political” issues? How do we, as faithful individuals, live out our baptismal vows at the voting booth? (This course will be live streamed.)
Contemporary Christian theology incorporates multiple voices and perspectives: theologies of spirituality, community, and liberation; biblical, narrative, public, and feminist theologies, and other contextual theologies. Develop your own map through this terrain, and articulate your own approach to contemporary theology.
Dig deeper into Biblical characters, comparing how sacred texts describe them with how cultures have captured them. Explore these characters and their stories through various art forms (theatre, visual arts, music, and poetry), guided by faithful artists in each of these fields.

Word
If you can recall words that hurt you, you can probably also recall words that sustained you, encouraged you, lifted you up. Words have power, power to create and power to destroy, power to bless and power to curse, power to heal and power to hurt.
