Learn To Protect Yourself and Loved Ones From Fraud; Also What Banks and US Secret Service Are Doing About Cybercrime

Thursday, September 4, 2025 - 5:30 - 7PM

In-Person @ W.M. Keck Observatory Conference Room & Streamed 'Live'

Personal fraud prevention, cybersecurity protections by banks and U.S. Secret Service, and how to prevent online predators from causing you and/or loved ones a financial disaster will top Waimea Community Association’s 5:30-7 p.m., Thurs., Sept. 4, 2025 Town Meeting.

Three experts will share strategies and advice, including:

· Joely Chung, who is First Hawaiian Bank’s Senior Vice President who manages the bank’s Enterprise Operational Risk Division, focusing on mitigating losses associated with operational and fraud risks. A graduate of Kamehameha Schools, Chung is a practicing civil litigator, a former Prosecuting Attorney and a certified anti-money laundering specialist. She will specifically provide advice on how to protect yourself and loved ones from fraud.

· Adam Palmer, who is Chief Information Security Officer for First Hawaiian and who leads the Cybersecurity Division to safeguard the bank’s digital banking environment for customers. Palmer has an MBA from UH-Manoa and 20 years of cybersecurity experience.

· Cherise Richards, who is also a graduate of Kamehameha as well as Brigham Young University – Provo and George Washington University. After working for eBay and others, Richards joined the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) about 19 years ago as an analyst on the Presidential Protective Division in Washington, D.C. She is currently assigned to the Honolulu Field Office Hawai’i-Pacific Cyber Fraud Task Force in the Honolulu District Digital Forensic Lab, where she provides technical guidance, cybersecurity training and forensic support to Special Agents and law enforcement partners within the cyber community.

“We appreciate this level of expertise participating in our meeting, said WCA President Mary Beth Laychak

Coming Events

Labor Day weekend marks the Parker Ranch Round-Up Club's 50th Anniversary but 48th annual rodeo - because of covid they were unable to hold it for two years. Many ranch hands and community friends have helped create and sustain this club and its events through the years to help ranch keiki further their education through college. The entire community - and island - are invited for a memorable weekend! Tickets available at Earl's and Paniolo Preservation Society's museum-gift shop in Pukalani Stables.

Every year, Kahilu solicits Exhibition Proposals for our Simperman and Suli T. Go Galleries. As many as 6 exhibits will be selected to fill exhibition slots from June through December of 2026. Individual artists, artist groups, curators, and organizers are all encouraged to submit exhibition proposals. Need help navigating the process? Email Kahilu's Gallery Director, Andy Behrle, at gallery@kahilu.org.

Exceptional instructor! Registration extended to September 1.

FYI - This 2-day CERT training requires serious pre-training time commitment to prep for the hands-on sessions, but the end result is both being better prepared to protect your family and neighborhood or school, faith group, club, etc., and the wider community if you so choose. There is no charge and participants do not have to become a CERT volunteer but many do - feeling empowered and willing to share what they've learned to help keep others safe and build community resilience.

FYI - this is NOT just for kupuna...everyone over 18 should have an Advance Health Care Directive which includes having this important conversation with loved ones. Community First volunteers and staff are well trained, respectful of our privacy and non-judgemental - heartfelt in their approach. Call if you have questions. AHCDs should be periodically updated.

It's our 73rd Annual Paniolo Parade! Don't miss it!

The Hawai'i Radio Hour Team: Naka Nathaniel, Mileka Lincoln and Kolby Akamu Moser. This still new weekly news and variety show features stories from some of Hawai‘i’s most respected journalists, mo‘olelo and mele from beloved performers and thought-provoking conversations. All invited.

More details soon - please SAVE THE DATE and plan to attend this free gathering to learn about a number of exciting and/or challenging issues facing our community, our island, our state that were prioritized by our community during more than a dozen Waimea Futures conversations in 2023. Those conversations have guided Waimea Community Weaving Hui volunteers in providing community input to Hawai'i Community Foundation on the distribution of more than $800,000 in Richard Smart Funds to Waimea nonprofits from the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust. Presenters will discuss actions taken, underway or being considered and then you'll be asked to share your mana'o. This is an evolving community-driven process and your voice is important. It is our future and our kuleana.
