Understanding Form 8621

And How it Relates to Investments in Foreign Mutual Funds

Many investors unknowingly invest in Passive Foreign Investment Companies (PFICs)

and as a result must file IRS Form 8621 or Information Return by a Shareholder of a Passive Foreign Investment Company or Qualified Electing Fund. Taxpayers are often shocked to

see the degree of complexity which can arise from a nominal investment in a

foreign mutual fund which falls under these rules.

This course will be a line by line review of Form 8621 and address the tax treatment of

PFICs including important elections which must be made when shares in a PFIC are first acquired. Practical methods of addressing PFIC compliance issues will be emphasized

in this seminar. This seminar also will include a discussion of the latest

developments in the offshore bank account tax compliance area.

Any late breaking federal tax legistlation will also be covered.
