Our work would not be possible without the trailblazing efforts of pioneers like Julio Martinez, whose invaluable contributions to the addiction treatment & recovery fields paved the way for current community-based treatment models used in New York State and around the nation.
Mr. Martinez –who was in recovery himself– went on to establish Phoenix House, a treatment facility operated by former substance users, which –today– is a national nonprofit rehabilitation organization operating 150 programs across ten states.
Mr. Martinez also founded Project Return, which developed a variety of programs to help addicts and former addicts, and served as the director of New York State's drug treatment programs. In 1998, he became the Executive Director of BASICS in the Bronx, one of the founding affiliates of Acacia Network.
Acacia Network’s Julio Martinez Memorial Fund (JMMF) Breakfast honors the legacy of Mr. Martinez, while recognizing that there is still much work to be done to address the continued impact of the opioid epidemic in our neighborhoods.
