Topic: Bridging Faith and Science to Combat the Overdose Crisis

Breakfast Host:

Compassionate Community Care

The U.S. overdose crisis is among the most pressing and indiscriminate health challenges of our time. Communities of faith are not exempt from the overdose crisis, but rather poignant reminders that addiction is no respecter of persons based on religion, income, race, age, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.

Provisional data from CDC's National Center for Health Statistics identifies an estimated 107,543 drug overdose deaths in the United States during 2023 (that’s 12 deaths every hour of each day). The hopeful news is that overdose deaths are preventable and solutions to the crisis lie within our own communities.

December SFIC Monthly Breakfast Featured Presenter Rev. Elaine Donlin will help attendees recognize the signs of an opioid overdose and how to administer the life-saving opioid overdose reversal drug NARCAN, which will be provided following the presentation.

Reverend Elaine Donlin, Buddhist Church of San Francisco

Rev. Elaine Donlin is an ordained Jodo-Shin Buddhist priest serving at the Buddhist Church of San Francisco. She has served in the SF County Jails since 2008 providing meditation, Buddhist teachings, and spiritual counseling in both the Men's and Women's jails.

She presently serves as president of the Japanese American Religious Federation (JARF), an interfaith consortium (founded in 1948) of churches and temples in the SF Japantown area. Earlier this year, she was honored to join the staff of the San Francisco Night Ministry (which celebrated its 60th year of compassionate care on Nov. 1, 2024).

In June of 2024, Rev. Elaine completed a 10-month interfaith program facilitated by the Clinton Foundation called “Empowering Faith Leaders,"  where Bay Are faith leaders were equipped with the knowledge and resources needed to organize and educate community members to reduce the stigma of addiction and to fight substance use disorders within our communities of faith.
