Dear Friend,

You're invited to join the Western Environmental Law Center over Zoom for a video conference and phone conversation discussing the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling narrowing federal protections for wetlands and the nation's waterways under the Clean Water Act.

Protection of surface waters took a hard hit with the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Sackett v. Environmental Protection Agency as the court severely limited wetlands that are subject to protection under the Clean Water Act and called into question the extent to which intermittent and ephemeral streams are protected. Join WELC Senior Attorney Tannis Fox for a discussion of the implications of the court’s decision for Western surface waters and what states can do to protect their waters in light of the narrowed federal protection.

This event will take place over Zoom: Wednesday, August 2
from 11am-12pm Pacific Time (12pm-1pm Mountain Time)

Tannis Fox joined WELC in 2020, and focuses on protecting New Mexico’s scarce water resources and moving the state away from its overreliance on oil and gas, toward clean energy sources. Previously, Tannis was engaged in environmental protection work for the state of New Mexico for almost 20 years, with the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office and as Deputy General Counsel for the New Mexico Environmental Department, with a focus on water quality protection. She was the 2016 recipient of the Karl Souder Water Protection Award from the New Mexico Environmental Law Center for her work protecting groundwater from copper mining. Prior to joining WELC, Tannis served as U.S. Senator Tom Udall’s speechwriter. Tannis graduated from Williams College with a major in economics, graduated magna cum laude from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, and clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
