UOAA National Support Group

As an Individual National Member of UOAA we wanted you to be the first to know about a new virtual opportunity for support and community!

Whether you're newly adjusting to life with an ostomy or have been living with one for years, United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA) invites you to join our new National Support Group, a welcoming virtual community where people living with an ostomy, caregivers, family members, and supporters can connect, learn, and support one another in a safe, confidential environment.

Launch Meeting

Our inaugural meeting will be Sunday, August 16 at 4pm ET (3pm CT, 2pm MT, 1pm PT) and focus on mental and emotional well-being. Featured presenter Elise McKelvey, PsyD, Licensed Clinical Psychologist with GI Psychology, will discuss the often-overlooked psychological aspects of living with an ostomy, including:

  • Changes in identity and body image
  • Feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression
  • Hypervigilance and ostomy monitoring
  • The impact of an ostomy on relationships, sex, and intimacy

Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and participate in an open discussion.

We'll also welcome Joanna Burgess, MSN, RN, CWOCN, who will provide a brief update on recent CMS ostomy supply changes and answer general ostomy-related questions.

Whether you're looking for practical information, emotional support, or simply the opportunity to connect with others who understand, you'll find a community that welcomes you wherever you are on your journey.

What to Expect

  • A judgment-free environment where everyone is welcome
  • Peer support and meaningful conversation with others who understand life with an ostomy
  • Regular facilitated discussions on topics such as nutrition, skin care, travel, intimacy, emotional wellness, returning to work, and more
  • Guest speakers, including wound, ostomy, and continence (WOC) nurses, mental health professionals, advocates, and other experts
  • Open Q&A sessions where your questions help shape the conversation

Who Should Attend

  • This meeting is open to anyone whose life has been touched by an ostomy, including:
  • Individuals living with an ostomy
  • People preparing for ostomy surgery
  • Caregivers, spouses, partners, family members, and friends
