Stay for the Hope

Dear Friends,

Every day on the farm is full—and this week was no exception. We hosted a panel of five graduates who shared what life is like after completing our Transitional Employment program, helping current trainees prepare for what comes next.

We also celebrated a graduation (pictured), welcomed a reporter from Australia, and hosted many volunteers—including our volunteer cook. One especially meaningful visit came from a recent graduate who stopped by to volunteer on his day off. He also shared some exciting news: after being hired part-time, he’s now been invited to move into a full-time role.

Meanwhile, farm staff and trainees have been busy planting crops from the greenhouse into prepared beds, and we met with an irrigation specialist to plan the system for our permanent site. And we're getting ready for Wednesday's An Evening of Hope.

I hope you can join us this coming Wednesday, April 15 to reflect on the powerful force of hope. I welcome hearing from you about your hopes and what keeps you hoping.

"Jane is reminding us that Hope is an Action"

Douglas Abrams, co-author of the Book of Hope

In this 1 minute video, Doug Abrams, Co-author with Dr. Jane Goodall, of The Book of Hope, shares warm wishes for our evening celebrating Hope, Dr. Jane Goodall, and our community.

The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times is a conversation between renowned naturalist Jane Goodall and author Douglas Abrams, exploring the nature of hope, particularly in the face of environmental and global crises. Goodall shares personal stories from her life and career, outlining her "Four Reasons for Hope":

  1. the human intellect,
  2. the resilience of nature,
  3. the power of young people, and the
  4. indomitable human spirit.

The book inspired this event and offers a guide to finding and acting on hope through small, meaningful actions.

The book is available at our Downtown and Capitola Stores or on our

event and ticket page.

Watch the trailer for Jane Goodall: The Hope

The film documents how witnessing degraded habitats and caged chimps in the 1980s forced Jane Goodall to leave field research to save the species. The film highlights her mission to inspire action and hope and features her work with children in her Roots and Shoots program.

Thank you to the City of Santa Cruz and Landmark Theatres for making this event possible.

Continuing the Conversation with our Community

Hear from our Panelists after the Film

In the face of local challenges, including cuts to the social safety net, lack of affordable housing and the disconnect between housing costs and wages, we wanted to ground the conversation in voices from our local community. It was wonderful to reach out to potential panelists, and we hope hearing from these panelists enriches our community and sparks hope as an action!

Learn about our dozen panelists here.

The farm is humming with plant, bird and human life and we welcome you to stop by to stroll, volunteer, or purchase strawberries!

If you're interested, please email me about your hopes, who inspires you to sustain hope, or how hope shows up in your life.

On behalf of all of us at HGP, thank you for tending this work with your attention, participation, and support! I'm so grateful for that.

Warm good wishes and appreciation,

Darrie
