Accessing individualized funding through FMS/FSCD gives families the opportunity to choose how support staff are part of their family member’s life. With that choice comes the responsibility of finding the right people—staff who are a good fit, share your values, and can support your family member’s goals in meaningful ways.

This session is designed to support families through the staff-hiring process, step by step. We’ll start by thinking about your family member’s vision for a good life and how that vision can guide who you hire. From there, we’ll explore how to write clear job descriptions, advertise effectively, hire for the right fit, and build relationships that help staff stay.

Families will leave with practical ideas, tools, and greater confidence to build a strong and sustainable support team that makes everyday life better.

In this session, we will cover:

  • Thinking about your family member’s vision for a meaningful life and using it to guide hiring
  • Writing clear and effective job descriptions and job postings
  • Identifying the skills, qualities, and values to look for in staff
  • Practical strategies for finding and keeping good staff

Hiring and training new staff is one of the most important responsibilities for families using individualized funding through FMS/FSCD. A thoughtful and well-structured process ensures that staff are set up for success in supporting your family members. Families and Fund Administrators play a critical role in shaping and maintaining strong, respectful working relationships with their staff.

Join us for a session that provides practical guidance on staff hiring processes. We will explore how to conduct interviews, complete reference and police checks and clarify the difference between employees and contractors (self-employed). Participants will learn how to communicate clear job expectations, review administrative requirements, and establish effective communication practices.

Key concepts include:

  • Conducting effective pre-screening processes and interviews
  • Understanding responsibilities with employees or contractor (self-employed) staff
  • Setting clear expectations for staff
  • Managing required documentation
