SHOWING TONIGHT AT ST. JOHN'S!
St. John's will host a showing of the movie "Exodus", a 1960's movie with Paul Newman, that captures the struggle of the founding of the modern State of Israel . The movie was based on the 1958 novel Exodus by Leon Uris . As the movie is four hours, we will watch the first half TONIGHT Wednesday, July 18 and the second half on Wed. July 25, starting at 6:45 PM . You can join us for the 6:00 PM service of Holy Eucharist and then watch the movie at 6:45 PM. Popcorn will be provided!!!

  • The Very Rev. Tracy Lind video about dealing with Altzheimers
The Very Rev. Tracy Lind developed Altzheimers in her early 60's. Although still in the early stages, she had to give up her position as Dean of Trinity Cathedral in Cincinnati. She has found a calling to speak about what its like to have Altzheimers for as long as she is able. Tracy spoke at the seminary recently and her presentation was recorded. Please join me on Sunday, July 29 at 10:50 in Carol's office to watch this hour long video.

  • Backpack donations needed
A gain this year, the Western Fairfax Christian Ministries has asked us to join them in collecting backpacks for children in need when they return to school in September. We have been asked to supply 25 LARGE, NEW backpacks for students at Centreville High School. They need to be delivered to the high school by early August. Donations can be dropped off at the church office or you can bring them on Sunday and put them in the food baskets. The backpacks need to be very sturdy so they will last more than one year. (Costco has these backpacks on sale now for about $16.) We have 22 backpacks so far. Many thanks to those who donated them!

  • Mission Trip
Lindsay Jones, daughter of Sandy and Dan Jones, is on a mission trip to Haiti from July 12-19 with youth from Epiphany Episcopal Church in Oak Hill. They will be helping with a Vacation Bible School and cleaning up an area for a library. Please keep Lindsay and her fellow missioners in your prayers. To follow what they are doing on their trip CLICK HERE

  • Afghan Orders

Several people have inquired about putting in an order for one of St. John's Centreville Afghans, which was produced and sold here a few years ago. If you would like to add your name to the list, we will collect the names and see if we have enough interest to put in an order. The list is in the Breezeway. (We need to order 24.) You may also email the office: SJECCentreville@aol.com. The price is about $50.

  • Looking for a good movie?
Katharine Lavery highly recommends the movie "Mr. Rogers", a documentary about the life and ministry of Fred Rogers, a Presbyterian minister and star of the TV show "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood". Mr. Rogers was able to teach children Christian values by his stories and the guests he had on the show. Katharine says its a very uplifting movie.

  • Many thanks go to:
Tom McDermott and David Daniel Weir who spent most of one day working on the church computers and making sure they are up to date.
Penny Parker and Marie McDermott who volunteer their time to work in the church office for several hours each week; Penny on Tuesday and Marie on Wednesday.

  • Nursery help needed this Sunday!
Our nursery supervisor, Gluay Zimmerman, will be away on July 22 ( THIS SUNDAY ), August 5 and August 12. We would like to have a volunteer to staff the nursery each of those Sundays. Can you help? Please tell Carol as soon as possible.

  • Help needed for services this summer
If you are a Lay Eucharistic Minister, lector, usher, or crucifer, please click on the "Altar Servers" box further on down this page. We are in need of people to sign up for these various positions for the remainder of the summer. As many people are away, it's hard to get a full complement of volunteers. Please check your calendars and see when you might be able to help. Then sign up on "Altar Servers" box below. We also need volunteers to provide snacks for coffee hour and flowers for the altar. Sign up below.

  • June Vestry Highlights
·   HVAC Installation approved
·          HVAC maintenance service contract approved
·          Mortgage Re-finance details on target for closing
·          By-Law revisions input and discussion
·          Poison ivy treatment completed
Wonder what the Vestry does and what goes on in Vestry meetings? Feel free to sit in on one! The Vestry meets on the third Sunday of each month at noon in the library. All but three members of our Vestry will be rotating off in February, having completed their 3 year terms. So we will need up to 9 volunteers to fill the seats on the Vestry. Don't assume "someone else will do it" or "I have nothing to offer". Everyone has gifts and talents that can be used and we need YOUR help. Talk to a current Vestry member and/or sit in on a meeting. Then decide what you can do.

Carol will be away at Education for Ministry mentor training from July 26 - 28 at Roslyn Retreat Center in Richmond.

SUNDAY SERVICE

We can prepare our hearts & minds by reading ahead for the Sunday Service lessons.

The Ninth Sunday
after Pentecost

July 22, 2018
9:30 AM

The First Reading: 2 Samuel 7:1-14a
King David is convicted to make a house for God's presence, but God declares that he will have David's son build a fitting temple for him instead.

The Psalm: 89:20-37

The Epistle: Ephesians 2:11-22
The sacrifice of Jesus breaks down the old barriers between the circumcised and uncircumcised. All saints stand on level ground at the cross.

The Gospel: Mark 6:30-34, 53-60
It is good to be busy about God's work. It is good, too, to be still about God's work. Sitting still, literally, can be uncomfortable to our busy bodies, but allows us to learn in our bones that God is Lord of heaven and earth.

Intercession
This is what we are doing when we come into the presence of God with intercessions: holding those for whom we care, holding those who have asked us to pray for them, holding them on our hearts, and taking them into the heart of God.
