When a teacher pulled my parents aside and told them they need to send me to college, my parents said, "We need to start saving some money and Carol, you'll get a job in the shop when you are 16.”
In high school I prepared for college, but also my Mom insisted I learn some business skills. Every summer, from high school through college I had a job in a manufacturing company working in the mail room or tool crib or as a secretary coordinating work orders for the maintenance department.
These were skills I used to start my own small business and develop a science resource center to deliver science kits to every K-8 CCSD classroom.
I’m grateful my parents instilled in me that with an education, I’d be able to get a decent job with a living wage, support myself and have a better life.
SC needs an economy that works for everyone and gives everyone an opportunity to succeed.
