Parents of young children: Don't miss MOD's special exhibit, Potter the Otter: a Healthy Adventure.
Potter the Otter brings the beloved First Five children's books to life! Children can dive into a world of interactive play when they visit Potter the Otter. This family-friendly exhibit teaches children about eating fruits and veggies, drinking water, playing and moving every day, and many more healthful habits.
The dramatic rise of prices in our food, household products, gas, energy, rent, automobiles, etc. has caused us to seek clever ways to provide for our families. Local parents share their techniques on managing food and household product expenses and one shopper compares shopping at two different stores with her same list.
"You’ve got to be joking.” My 14-year-old son looked sick with panic. “No way are my friends doing that. You can’t.” But they did! Scroll down for this delightful story about teens, with a surprise ending.
Happy discoveries, Parmalee

10 Teens. 0 Phones. 1 Unsupervised Camping Trip.
What Could Go Wrong?
| |
And, more importantly, what could go RIGHT?
by Catherine Price, August 21
"Last week, I read a story in The Times (of London) that I need to share with you. It’s about how the author—chief interviewer Decca Aitkenhead—convinced her sons and some fellow teenagers to ditch their smartphones for a month and use Light Phones instead. What’s more, she took it a step further and invited the teens to do something truly unusual in this day and age: to go on an unsupervised overnight camping trip together, totally on their own, and without phones.
The last thing I’ll say about this article, which clearly I loved very, very much, is that by giving the teenagers a chance to have a screen-free experience totally on their own, Aitkenhead also gave them the chance to grow and mature—even though it was just one night."

Savvy Local Parents Share Their Shopping Skills
The Question:
What’s your family's food/household products shopping cost and strategy?
Gone are the days when four bags of groceries cost $75 and were enough to feed a family for a week. Even McDonald’s is no longer an inexpensive, guilty night out.
- Ugh! I spend approximately $2000/month for a family of 6...
- Family of 4 — $750/ month...
- Try to keep it under $650 a month for a family of 5...
The differences are interesting. Some are startling. Read more > > >

Being a data geek and trying to avoid doing other things I should probably be doing, I compared 24 items I bought at Walmart with their (online) Safeway price. (Please note that my photos include some items for which I couldn’t find an exact Safeway match, so they aren’t included in the data below.)
Here are the exciting results! Continue > > >
