Leah Brown is one of GlobalMindED's Board members-Elect and anchor among our leaders in London. As a pioneering
lawyer for a sovereign wealth manager
, Leah is a young Caribbean British woman who is fearless in a male dominated, homogenous world. She aligns with men who help and mentor her, women who ground her in their small but mighty networks, and leaders outside of England like the inclusive leaders in the GlobalMindED community. As we celebrate International Week of Women, Leah represents the young leaders who will transform our world for good. We are proud to work with her and to share her story. Meet her June 6-8 in Denver at GlobalMindED 2020.

You are culturally Black British with African American parents working with a Middle Eastern firm in financial services. How do you bridge these many worlds?
My brother and I were different from everyone we grew up with and were exposed to different backgrounds and cultures from an early age. Consequently, I learned to adapt where necessary. Working for a sovereign wealth fund is complex culturally, but clear communication and working hard with integrity has helped to build trust thus far.
How do you navigate this homogenous world of banking and finance as a diverse and inclusive female leader who is 33 years old?
As I have progressed in my career, people often assume that I am much younger than I am. Emotional intelligence has been a great tool for identifying when to stand up for myself and when not to take things personally. I try to do my best every day, cognizant of the unspoken pressure to be better than the next person. I have sought to minimize differences rather than shout from the rooftops about them. What matters in financial services is delivering commercial advice to maximize the bottom line, not what you look like or where you are from.
What are the leadership goals you have for your industry and for the world of business overall?
Naturally I would like to see women in more senior positions, but I would like to see diverse and younger leadership teams. Across the City of London, there has been a big push towards blind recruitment, which is not an insignificant step to improving the diversity of personnel and thought leadership in the corporate world.
What advice do you have for other aspiring young women who would like to go into banking and finance?
Be yourself. Get the best degree you can. Do not apologize for who you are or what you bring to the table. Do not focus on being different. Do not worry about being the only one. Use your unique gifts. Be bold. Know your worth. Keep putting yourself forward until you get what you want.
What advice do you have for men on how to create environments where talent such as yours can thrive and rise to leadership within the organization?
Barack Obama recently said that the world would be a different place if women were running it because "[men] cling to power, they are insecure, they have outdated ideas and the energy and fresh vision and new approaches are squashed". I would love to see more investment in the development, training, and promotion of women within organizations, and the backing by executive stakeholders enabling them to be considered for senior roles in the pipeline.
What leadership legacy do you most want to leave?
First, I hope that I can inspire future leaders to persevere for those that will come behind them by being the change they want to see in the world. Sometimes all it takes is one trailblazer to forge a path. Secondly, I am keen to leave a positive impression on the industry so that the bias swings in favor of people like me, rather than against us.
At GlobalMindED 2020, Leah will be participating in the Foundations and Funders Track, including How Can Funders Be More Inclusive and Less Exclusive?
|
Join us to recognize the most inclusive leaders in key industries for their innovations and bold actions to promote access and equity for women, people of color, and underrepresented populations in their recruiting, development, senior management on their boards, and in their pipeline strategies from education to employment.

Many from around the world are thinking of 2020 as the gateway to our most vital decade for delivering equity, the Sustainable Development Goals, and a world where all can thrive. Our key time for these outcomes is 2020-2030.
GlobalMindED DAF and the SDG Impact Fund are a powerful combined force for good as the 2019 year comes to a close and we reflect on the gratitude and the commitments we make to the causes we care most about. The DAF offers immense power and flexibility for giving prior to the year's end as you plant seeds of generous intention for 2020 and the decade ahead.
When you contribute to GlobalMindED, you support students like Emanuel Walker whose story is below. He was in the class of 2018. Since 2015, we have served more than 300 students by connecting them to role models, mentors, internships and jobs. Your generous support will allow us to take our work 10x and reach these talented students at scale who lack the resources and support we provide. Your support also helps teachers who can't afford the conference fees, faculty at colleges which are under resourced and students who persist at those universities despite food insecurity and/or housing insecurity.

Join the #NeedHerScience Campaign that is aimed at addressing journal-level gender bias. For decades, studies have demonstrated gender bias in publishing. This may occur at various stages in the process, including at the level of the
journals. The equitable inclusion of women editors at every level is long overdue. Addressing journal gender bias starts at the top.
The goal: To raise awareness about gender bias in publishing and share with stakeholders, including journal editors and owners, the overall number of scientists, healthcare professionals and others who have taken the pledge. The pledge can be taken anonymously. Educators and others are encouraged to take the pledge and share information about this issue with colleagues and trainees.
GET INVOLVED
Here are 3 quick and easy things you can do to join the #NeedHerScience Campaign: 1. Disseminate the infographic Tips for Publishing in Medical Journals.
2. Take the #NeedHerScience pledge.
3. Encourage others to take the pledge.
TAKE THE PLEDGE
PLEDGE: "As part of determining where to submit my manuscripts, I will look at the list of editors and consider whether a journal has equitably included qualified women at every level."
