18th Annual Walk for Water | |
Each year, GEL employees and their family members come together to raise funds and take part in the Walk for Water. This important event raises awareness of the global water crisis. GEL has supported the event, which aims to raise awareness of the global water crisis, since our founders George and Molly Greene established Water Missions in 2001.
196 walkers registered on the GEL team for this year's event held on March 26th in Charleston. Over 4,000 people participated amidst the rainy weather!

With GEL's identity being rooted in service to the environmental community, sustainability is not only part of our culture but it is our duty as a company. We define sustainability as intentional stewardship and innovation to ensure the long-term wellbeing of our GEL Family, our business, our community, and our environment.
In July 2023, as a step towards advancing our sustainability efforts, the GEL Group, Inc officially welcomed Kaitlyn Sagan (pictured) to take on the role of Sustainability Specialist. Ms. Sagan, who previously served as a Sustainability Intern with GEL, is responsible for managing the company’s sustainability initiatives, monitoring and analyzing sustainability data, and helping to advance sustainability goals and policies within the organization.
We look forward to the impacts we can make through our focus on sustainability and furthering GEL's mission: To improve the Quality of Life of this and future generations by helping people protect and be good stewards of our Environment and Natural Resources.

In addition to locating underground utilities, our team is also well versed in investigating the subsurface for other features, objects, and structures. This can be done using a combination of geophysical instruments that are also commonly used for utility detection. These include ground penetrating radar, electromagnetic pipe and cable locators, and magnetometers. Selecting the appropriate geophysical method is based on factors such as the type of feature being investigated, the depth of the feature, the composition of the surrounding soil, and site setting.
Some common features that we have investigated and detected include:
- Unmarked Graves
- Underground Storage Tanks
- Septic Tanks and Underground Vaults
- Buried Foundations and Slabs
- Paved-over Manholes
- Buried Valve/Meter Boxes and Drainage Structures
- Shallow Voids
- Bulkhead Tiebacks and Deadman Anchors
When asked to investigate underground features, we first consider the site-specific factors and the nature of the feature(s) in question to determine if an investigation will likely yield good results. If so, we work with our clients to tailor an approach that is technically appropriate, and just as important, cost-effective.

AI technology is being used to locate sources of clean energy | |
In an effort to search for new sources of low-carbon energy, Ohio State University researches have produced an AI tool that scans the earth's surface in search of expressions of subsurface reservoirs of naturally occurring free hydrogen. A list of known semicircular depression (SCD) locations was generated to train the AI model, which was then used to help narrow down the potential locations of these features in the ground that form near areas associated with natural or "gold hydrogen" deposits. With the use of remote sensing data to investigate what these areas look like from above, experts were able to narrow down which sites around the world are most likely to be associated with SCDs related to geologic hydrogen.
"The project found that AI demonstrates a ‘unique ability’ to map out surface expressions of potential subsurface hydrogen reservoirs around the world, as well as establish a baseline for further investigation of hydrogen-associated sites"
Although the process is still being developed, it has been a significant breakthrough and experts are excited about the potential just a few years down the road.
