28th Edition | 2nd Quarter 2022
Director's Note
Remember and Honor

For many of us, the impacts of the pandemic casted a light on some of the simple freedoms that we may have taken for granted in the past. When routine activities and conveniences are restrained, the impact on our lives can be significant. It brings to mind the fragility of our freedom and the bigger picture involving the significant threats we face and have faced from around the world.

We are extraordinarily blessed to live in a nation where we can can live free under the protection of our great military. To those who laid down their lives to defend our freedom and our way of life, we will never forget your sacrifice. On behalf of the GEL family, we thank you.

We wish you a happy and safe Memorial Day

Team Highlights
Recognized Employees from 1st Quarter 2022
February 2022

Parks Icenhour, P.E., PLS | SUE and Surveying Services Senior Manager
Raleigh, NC

Parks came to GEL in 2012 after a 38-year career with NCDOT’s Location & Surveys (L&S) Unit where he served most recently as Area Locating Engineer for the easternmost portion of N.C. When he joined GEL Solutions, Parks was essential in securing our relationship with NCDOT and has also been largely responsible for cultivating our surveying presence in North Carolina. Outside of his work life, Parks is intensely devoted to his family and spends a lot of time with his wife, Lorrie and their eleven great nieces and nephews. Additionally, you might hear Parks mention that he “plays the guitar” but to clarify, he is a gifted musician who has performed across the country (and overseas) throughout most of his life. He has shared the stage with many well-known artists and continues to be very active in music. We are grateful to have Parks for his valuable insight, his extraordinary work ethic and his willingness to help in all areas of our company.
March 2022

David Bass | Survey Technician
Raleigh, NC

David was originally with GEL Solutions from April 2019 – April 2020 and we were fortunate to have him return in July 2021. Upon his arrival last summer, he wasted no time in hitting the field to provide critical support on our Raleigh survey crew.  His continued dependability, strong work ethic and overall performance in the field has been impressive. Specifically, David has been recognized for the substantial role he performed on a recent 13-mile cross country project in Kinston, NC. We’ve been blessed to have David back on the team and we appreciate his hard work and incredible commitment.
Commemorating our Admin Crew!
We recently celebrated Administrative Professionals Day (April 27th) and we would like to acknowledge our great admin team, Kristan Dahl, Shae Iverson and Mindy Tyler! The support they provide for our company and our clients is crucial to our success throughout the year. Their expertise is often performed behind the scenes but their impact is felt throughout virtually every segment of our organization. We applaud these three for their incredible hard work and dedication!

Subsurface Fun Facts
Large Stone Spheres Discovered in Costa Rica
Six stone spheres have been recently discovered on the island of Isla del Caño and the Diquís Delta of Costa Rica where over 300 similar objects had been found previously. The majority of the spheres were discovered in 1940 by workers clearing the forest for a banana plantation. The stones, which range in size, the largest weighing about 16 tons, are very smooth and almost perfectly round. They are thought to have been hand-made by the ancient people of the Diquis Valley. Although there are many theories, the purpose of the spheres has never been confirmed.

Read more details about the stone spheres in the referenced articles found at heritagedaily.com and worldatlas.com.
In North Carolina, any engineering and surveying services are performed by GEL Engineering of NC, Inc. from the Greensboro and Raleigh locations.
