SBA Opens Business Recovery Centers in
Bladen and Johnston Counties, North Carolina

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced the opening of Business Recovery Centers (BRCs) in Bladen and Johnston counties on Oct. 1, to help businesses impacted by Hurricane Florence.

SBA representatives at the Centers can provide information about disaster loans, answer questions and assist businesses in completing the SBA application. The Centers will operate until further notice (including Columbus Day, Oct.8).

The SBA offers low-interest, long-term disaster loans for physical damage and working
capital. Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via the SBA’s secure website at DisasterLoan.sba.gov.

To be considered for all forms of disaster assistance, applicants should register online at DisasterAssistance.gov or download the FEMA mobile app. If online or mobile access is unavailable, applicants should call the FEMA toll-free helpline at 800-621-3362. Those who use 711-Relay or Video Relay Services should call 800-621-3362.

Additional details on the locations of Disaster Recovery Centers and the loan application process can be obtained by calling the SBA Customer Service Center at 800-659-2955 (800-877-8339 for the deaf and hard-of-hearing) or by sending an e-mail to disastercustomerservice@sba.gov.

The filing deadline to return applications for physical property damage is Nov. 13, 2018. The deadline to return economic injury applications is June 14, 2019.

CAWD Receives $200,000
to Help Students Complete Education and Training
T he Capital Area Workforce Development Board  was awarded $200,000 to help community college students complete education and training programs at Wake Technical Community College and Johnston Community College. The funds come from Governor Roy Cooper’s Finish Line grant initiative developed to assist with unforeseen financial emergencies that can often derail program completion.

CAWD expects to serve 200 students. Each can receive a one-time grant up to $1000.00 per school year if they qualify. After an initial screening, colleges forward student applications to CAWD’s Finish Line Program Manager for final determination. Academic standing and program completion rate are considered in conjunction with the type of financial emergency.

“We know there are many students who have had this need but we haven’t had the funds. Finish Line will be a great resource for our student community,” said Betty Woodall, Financial Aid Director at Johnston Community College.

Students Are to Receive Free Meals for a Month

All Johnston County students will be eligible for free breakfast and lunch in October as part of the Presidential Declaration for Disaster, the school system announced Sunday.

As a result of Hurricane Florence, the school system of 37,000 students was closed for almost a week. The storm also caused flooding on major highways in the county, including some parts of Interstates 40 and 95.

The free meals are for all students, regardless of meal account status.
Free November SAT Registration and CSS Profile Fee Waiver

The College Board is offering a free November SAT registration and CSS Profile™ fee waiver to students in a FEMA-designated area, including Johnston County.

Students should register for the November SAT (by October 24 online, by October 16 mailed) and then call Customer Service at 866-756-7346 by October 24 to receive a refund.

For the CSS Profile fee waiver, go to cssprofile.org and complete the application. The system automatically applies eligibility rules. Call CSS Profile Customer Service at 844-202-0524.
