A Blessed Year with Challenges Ahead

As 2024 comes to a close, we feel blessed to celebrate another successful year for GEL Solutions! We are grateful for our dedicated clients, the unwavering support of our GEL leadership and our affiliate companies. We would especially like to applaud our incredibly hard-working employees who pushed through a very demanding schedule over the past 12 months. This year, our group showcased their dedication and in particular, their aptitude in working together as a team.

We aim to carry our momentum into 2025 as we focus on the continued demands ahead. In late September of this year, Hurricane Helene brought unforeseen catastrophic flooding to the southeast. The Southern Appalachian region felt the most impact by Helene's devastation, including western North Carolina, the home state for most of our staff. The storm caused unprecedented damage to communities and infrastructure. Focus in the transportation industry was immediately shifted to the relief and rebuilding efforts in the region, an endeavor that will span for many years to come. The task is daunting, but in times like these, the resilience and compassion of our fellow citizens, communities and organizations comes to light. We at GEL Solutions look forward to doing our part in joining the monumental efforts in rebuilding the areas affected by this devastating event.

We thank you for your support in 2024 and we wish you a Happy New Year!

GEL performed surveys in support of the NCDOT Rail Division’s Raleigh to Richmond (R2R) S-Line Project. Full surveys were conducted along existing and proposed corridors including over 27 miles of control traverse, 750 properties, dtms, drainage and utilities. Deliverables were in NCDOT Open Roads Designer formats.

The R2R S-Line Project is part of the larger Southeast Corridor the serves States from Florida to Washington, D.C. Upon completion it will be one of the most advanced rail lines in the southeast connecting urban areas with combined populations of over 20 million residents. GEL is proud to play a part in the future transportation solutions for the southeastern United States.

Visit our website for or more information on our surveying services.

More details and updates about the R2R S-Line project can be found here.

Celebrating another year of our team's adherence to safety

Here at GEL Solutions, we take safety very seriously. Not just as individuals, but teammates watching out for each other. Safety is an essential part of the GEL culture and Core Values. We promote a transparent policy where we share and discuss any safety incidents that occur. This includes sharing near miss reports with not only our GEL Solutions team, but across all GEL LLCs. Our employees have also shared many accounts over the years where they have responded to other citizens in need, mostly involving traffic related incidents. As a result of our team's continual vigilance and adherence to safety, GEL Solutions has not had an OSHA recordable incident in over 10 years.

AI technology being explored for powerline undergrounding

In the wake of Hurricane Beryl, which exposed the susceptibility of overhead powerlines to extreme weather, researchers are working to design an advanced subsurface sensor system. This system will leverage AI and UAV technology to ensure the safe and efficient installation of underground powerlines

The research team is from the University of Houston in collaboration with Hawaii-based engineering firm, Oceanit. The goal is to develop a real-time, high-resolution subsurface sensor system utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), electromagnetic resistivity well logging, and machine learning.

This innovative technology will identify underground obstacles ahead of a drill bit, reducing the risk of damage to existing infrastructure and streamlining the installation process.

The ultimate objective is to create a prototype capable of delivering near real-time, high-resolution imaging of underground conditions during horizontal directional drilling (HDD).
