Remembering Molly Greene
In July 2019, we were shocked and saddened to hear about the unexpected passing of Molly Greene. Molly and her husband, George, founded GEL in 1981. In 2001, they decided to concentrate their efforts on creating a Christian non-profit,
Water Mission
, dedicated to providing clean drinking water to people in third-world countries and those affected by natural disasters.
Molly was incredibly optimistic, driven, compassionate and humble. Her tenacious, positive enthusiasm inspired many. The Greenes faced some hard times along their path but always found a way to push through, fulfilling their dedication to help others. When production of their water filtration systems began in the early 2000's, they had very little funding or staff. Today, Water Mission employs over 200 staff members around the world and has provided clean water to over 3 million people.
Our GEL family shares the grief with the many people around the world who have been impacted by the legacy and love of this very special woman. As a company and as individuals, we hope to carry on the values rooted in us by Molly and George Greene.

AUGUST 2019
Kevin Miller | SUE Technician
Charleston, South Carolina
Kevin joined GEL Solutions in September, 2017 and is known for his sense of humor, positive attitude and commitment to his team. After having knee surgery earlier this year, he was forced to take several weeks off from field work. But instead of watching the time go by, he used it as an opportunity to start learning Computer Aided Design (CAD) and committed himself to training throughout the duration of his recovery.
Kevin has been involved in a wide range of projects and has built a solid reputation in the field, now complemented with his growing contributions in CAD work. We thank Kevin for his hard work, dedication and for always finding a way to lighten the mood with his co-workers.

Emergency Services
When timing is critical, we are prepared to respond.
|
|
|
When major weather events occur, underground utilities and other assets are often threatened or damaged. Being based in the southeast, we at GEL Solutions are all too familiar with hurricanes and the destruction they can cause. Last year,
During the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, our crews in North Carolina joined forces with NCDOT to begin the rebuilding process. SUE and Survey teams were involved in several emergency projects related to washed out roads and damage caused by the storm.
When emergencies arise, we offer all available resources to our clients and to the communities we serve. If our SUE, surveying or other services can be of value to you during rebuilding efforts, contact us to see how we can help.

3D Laser Scanning
Guilford County, NC
|
|
The GEL Solutions team in Greensboro, NC has recently been involved in 2 NCDOT roadway projects in Guilford County, NC, utilizing 3D laser scanning data collection, also commonly called terrestrial LiDAR scanning.
Along a 2-mile stretch of NC 68, GEL Solutions provided ground survey control, pavement scans, and applied a high-density point cloud, ultimately producing a digital terrain model (DTM) of the project area. This data will be used to investigate the potential causes of multiple hydroplaning vehicle accidents along this segment of roadway. GEL Solutions' services were considered "mission critical" in the investigation and we were privileged to contribute this critical information to our client.
On another project in Guilford County, our 3D Laser Scanning capabilities are being utilized on a
Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE)
wall monitoring project involving 3 separate bridge construction sites. The findings will be used to reveal potential movement and deformation issues to assess the performance of the MSE walls.
Initial readings were taken at pre-determined points along the structures. Additional scheduled scans have followed and will continue over several months for settlement monitoring, allowing for various phases of construction to conclude.
GEL Solutions' support on this project is expected to continue into 2020.
Check out our
website
for more information about our 3D Laser Scanning services.

Georgia Duo Responds to Roadway Emergencies
Kevin Khadaran and
Nick Rebman out of our Marietta, Georgia location assisted victims in two separate roadway collisions this past summer.
Back in July, a truck had flipped on its side after being T-boned by an oncoming car in front of the GEL office. Though they did not witness the collision, Kevin was the first person to arrive at the scene and Nick arrived shortly after. Kevin immediately dialed 911 and went to check on the woman who was in the truck that had flipped. When other
bystanders
stepped in to assist the victims, Kevin and Nick began directing traffic while waiting on emergency responders.
In August, the same pair was working on a project near Blairsville, GA. They were locating utilities near a corner when a truck ran a red light close by, T-boning another car. Thankfully, the collision occurred at relatively low speed. Kevin and Nick came to the aid of drivers who both appeared to be ok. They offered the motorists water and stayed with them until police arrived.
We commend these two individuals for stepping up without hesitation and coming to the aid of their fellow citizens.

Life Discovered 1.5 Miles Below the Surface
|
|
Scientists have recently confirmed life in the depths of Canada's Kidd Mine, described as the deepest spot ever explored on land and the reservoir of the oldest known water. Single celled organisms are thriving in the extremely harsh conditions in this strange ecosystem located 7,900 feet below the surface and enveloped in total darkness.
Mineralogist Robert Hazen explains, "...exploring it could help us understand how life might have begun on other planets as well as on our own. We might even find alien-like creatures living undetected right beneath our feet."
