Making the neighborhood you want to live in!
Message from the President
Exciting times in Aspen!

Hi all. I will be giving monthly reports from the building committee so that all of the Aspen residents can stay informed. It’s an exciting time here in Aspen with plans to do a community league expansion off of our current building!!

To give a little history there was a feasibility study done two years ago to tear down and rebuild, but those costs we coming in around 2 million. That would put the league at risk financially and the more responsible route to go is an expansion of the current structure. This new addition will allow us to host events, our AGM, regular meetings and fitness and social programs for all ages. Currently we are working to get the transformer moved and it is looking like spring of 2019 that will happen. It will be relocated to the “to code” area by the parking lot. It has taken two years and a lot of work to just get that far.
The next steps are the “concept phase” in the city of Edmonton planning guide. While our team works on the paperwork we will be trying to do fundraising. If you have a business and can donate a silent auction item please email me at [email protected] .

We will be promoting all businesses that donate in every newsletter until our Spring Fling and silent Auction in 2019. They are also being promoted on our Facebook page!
If you have time to join our fundraising team that would be great! Please let me know. Any funds we collect during this year will be able to be matched by city and provincial grants!!

This is some of the feedback we have gotten so far and we will be mindful to take everything to heart during the concept phase.

Q: We don’t want it to big to draw weddings etc how will you design it?
A: It will be just a room and a shared kitchen with the playschool. There will not be multiple rooms. We will be visiting multiple halls to get a feel for a size that will work to be a usable space, but not overkill.

Q: Will the league be able to cover the costs of running it?
A: Yes, with our casino/grant money/rent from the playschool we will be fine. We will be able to be selective in who we rent to that will suit it the communities needs and feedback we get on what type of programs we run.

Q: What will it look like?
A: Our goal is to have a warm and inviting space. We will concentrate on durable commercial grade surfaces while incorporating great design.

As we get farther down the planning process I will send out drawings in newsletters and eblasts. Please keep an eye out to watch the progress and provide feedback.

Cheers, Kim Ruff
