Experience Counts:
Communications Director Heather C. Warlick
|
|
ASTEC Charter Schools has a new creative mind behind-the-scenes, making sure the school, its faculty and students have someone working hard to bring ASTEC all the positive attention we deserve!
Heather C. Warlick is ASTEC's new Communications Director and has hit the ground running. She began by giving the Comet's Tale a major facelift and is currently building a new, user-friendly website.
Ms. Warlick comes to ASTEC by way of The Oklahoman, where she was a reporter and editor for nearly a decade, and most recently, from United Way of Central Oklahoma, where she was Vice President of Communications.
Passionate about education, she is currently finishing coursework at University of Central Oklahoma in the Master of Public Administration program;
She will graduate with her MPA in December. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from UCO and an Associate of Arts degree in Music Performance from Palomar College in southern California.
Ms. Warlick plans to incorporate her video production skills into the ASTEC website, newsletter and social media platforms in order to highlight all the amazing things ASTEC scholars and faculty are doing. She is also excited to promote to local news media outlets any outstanding events, human interest stories and other newsworthy happenings to further promoting ASTEC in the community.
We are so pleased to welcome Ms. Warlick to the ASTEC Charter School family and I am sure we can expect great things to come from this dynamic professional.
Dr. Freda Deskin
Superintendent, Founder and CEO, ASTEC Charter Schools

Keeping our kids safe: Captain explains dangers
|
|
Captain Adam Flowers of the Canadian County Sheriff's Office delivered a presentation during the January ASTEC Faculty and Staff monthly meeting.
Flowers, a 12-year veteran of law enforcement, specializes in preventing predators from having access to children and teens. He's been directly involved in busting hundreds of child predators.
During his presentation, Flowers explained how many child predators find and befriend youth. He also discussed how youth use their cell phones in often inappropriate ways, including sending explicit photos of themselves to their friends.
Parents should check their
children's phones regularly, looking for apps that may appear to be calculators or phone setting apps, which are actually secret photo vaults or texting platforms.
Some apps Flowers recommends you install on your child's phone can monitor your child's photos, messages and whereabouts, even creating a GPS "fence" that will alarm parents when the child's phone has left the established GPS perimeter. These apps include Phone Sheriff and TeenSafe.
Capt. Flowers is the son of ASTEC teacher Linda Flowers.

Prom Perfect: Outfit an ASTEC
|
|
Does your closet need a little more space? You can help yourself, the environment and a deserving ASTEC Junior or Senior girl by donating your gently-used prom dresses to the ASTEC prom dress project.
Your closet will thank you, you'll immediately reduce your carbon footprint, and an ASTEC scholar will look like a million bucks at prom. That's a win-win-win situation!
Bring your donated prom dresses to the ASTEC Central Office in suite 39A.

Let's face it, yearbooks aren't cheap and not all ASTEC scholars can afford one. Imagine not having a yearbook to look back on and remember your fond high school days.
If you'd like to step up and be a Yearbook Angel, you can pay for a yearbook for an ASTEC student who might otherwise miss out.
Last year, Yearbook Angels were able to bridge the gap, making sure each and every senior got their own yearbooks. This year, we hope to inspire Yearbook Angels to do the same.
Yearbooks are $50. If you'd like to sponsor a yearbook for a student, you can pay it at once, or spread payments over the next few months, we're here to help you. To buy a yearbook,
see Business Manager Mimi Nguyen, Editor-in-Chief Abraham Mendieta, or Yearbook Advisor Mr. Perkins.
