This Sunday, This Week
New September Sermon Series
Unfortunately, there are erroneous beliefs about God and Christianity that have snuck their way into modern church culture. These popular phrases or ways of thinking are in direct conflict with what scripture actually teaches. Join us each September Sunday, as this 5-week sermon series looks at different phrases the Bible doesn’t actually say, comparing them to what the Bible actually does say.
This Week's Topic and Readings:

What the Bible Doesn’t Say:
“God helps those who help themselves.”

Texts:
Joel 2:21-27; Psalm 126; 1 Timothy 2:1-7; Matthew 6:25-33

Big Idea of the Message:
In this passage, Jesus calls for us to seek after the kingdom of God first, not ourselves;
if we do, everything else in life will fall into place.

Sudden Passing Sympathy
We lift up with sincere Christian sympathy the family and friends of Andrew Klinksick who passed away suddenly on Tuesday.

A memorial is planned to take place on Thursday, September 6 at 11:00 a.m. with a luncheon of fellowship and memories to immediately follow.

Andrew leaves behind two children, Carter and Danica, whom many of us know at Advent. Please lift the entire family up in prayer especially his parents, Jim and Linda Klinksick, and his long time girlfriend, Eryn Federer.
Go-Getter's Outing
The Go-Getter's will be meeting on Wednesday, September 5 at 6:00 p.m. at Lacono's located at 4452 Kenny Road. Sign up in the Narthex. Contact Barbara Murphy at 614-457-9920 with any questions.
This day is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.

Service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ – every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life – flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God’s grace.

You work every day to make your community a better place in the name of Jesus. As a part of a larger church, let us proclaim the love of Christ by the love we show our neighbors by taking part in this special weekend of service... as a church.

How can you serve?
Service has many faces and there are many ways that you can utilize the gifts God has given you to be a blessing to others in Jesus' name. AdventELC has a few intentional ways to help you serve the Lord. Donations may be left in the boxes in the Narthex.

The Bed Brigade
The Bed Brigade – a shared ministry with St. John Lutheran Church in Grove City – provides beds to families in need while at the same time sharing the love of Jesus Christ. There are two ways to help: one group builds the bed frames and one group delivers the beds, new sheets and blankets with a pillow, a toy, and a Bible that is age appropriate. Advent delivers beds one Saturday a month. It takes 2-3 hours. We need volunteers as well as drivers with a pick-up truck. The joy of walking into a house and seeing kids excited to get their own bed is priceless!
For God’s Work, Our Hands weekend, we will be delivering beds on Saturday, Sept. 8th. Meet at the church at 9:30 AM. Please sign up in the Narthex and indicate if you have a pick-up truck. Any questions, contact Bob Swinehart.
Loaves and Fishes
Loaves and Fishes is a shared ministry with the Salvation Army in Worthington, Ohio. This is an outreach to serve hot meals and pray with the homeless. We meet at the Salvation Army at 2:00 to cook the food. At 4:00, we leave the Salvation Army in a canteen truck and handout the food at three different stops. We are usually done around 7:00 pm.  We need volunteers to cook the food and/or deliver. It is a wonderful outreach and sharing Jesus’ love is a blessing, for both the person receiving the food and the people preparing/delivering it.
For God’s Work, Our Hands weekend, we will be cooking and delivering on Sunday, September 9. Meet at the Salvation Army, 760 Worthington Woods Blvd in Worthington, OH. Sign-up sheets are in the Narthex.
My Family and Me
for God's Work. Our Hands.
My Family and Me is a ministry at Advent geared for our young children aged 18 months-4 years old. We have been asked to plan an event on God's Work Our Hands day on September 8th. Last year we put together a small treat to put into the Blessing Bags and so we will plan on the same thing this year.
Please try to join us on Saturday, September 8th at 10AM at Advent as we put together a small treat for the blessing bags and then have some time for the kids to play together. All needed materials and a snack will be provided.

Please let me know if you plan to attend. There is also a sign up sheet in the Narthex. Older/younger siblings are welcome as well.

I hope to see you all there!

Information Meeting
We are hoping to continue the ministry to provide quilts to the Lutheran World Relief project that Isabel Leonard started and Jeni Lahman continued leadership for the group. There will be two information meetings. One will be held on Tuesday, September 4 at 9:30 am in the Fellowship Hall at Advent and the other will be on Saturday, September 8 in the Music office at Advent. Won’t you join us to learn how you can participate? There are lots of ways to be involved from cutting squares, piecing quilts, helping to assembling to prepare for final stitching, and knotting quilts. Men, women, teens, could be involved. For information, contact Norma Pitts, 614-457-8965 or Barb Murphy at 614-457-9920.
Sign up in the Narthex if interested in participating in quilting!

Bridges Out of Poverty
September 16, 5:30p - 7:30p
Bridges Out of Poverty explores poverty and the hidden rules of class. The class will be held on Sunday, September 16 from 5:30-7:30 here at Advent Lutheran Church, 3660 Kenny Road, Columbus.
The class will be led by Pastor Sally Padgett, of First English Lutheran Church in Columbus.
