Look at the MERV rating

Filters are rated on a scale known as the “minimum efficiency reporting value” or MERV rating. The scale runs from 1 to 20, and the higher the number, the more effective the filter. You might be tempted to choose the highest rated filter you can find but this can cause problems. Instead, consider the whole picture so can make the right choice that serves your needs.

Allergies

If someone in your family has allergies, or if you’re discovering that those sniffles, sore throats and headaches are allergy-related, it’s time to find a filter that deals with allergens. Dust, dust mites, pollen from outside, pet dander and other airborne culprits need a higher rated filter to remove them from the air. Consider an upgrade to deal with this situation and ensure that you account for it when making your assessment.

Pets

Having pets in your home (specifically the furry, cuddly kind) requires additional attention as far as your indoor air quality is concerned. Even if no one has allergies or sensitivities to pet dander and hair, your health as well as that of your animal’s will benefit from a higher rated filter.

Pressure drop and air distribution

Upgrading to a higher rated filter introduces a higher pressure drop in your unit. This is due to the smaller gaps in a “tighter” filter and it affects blower performance. As a result, you may need to make changes to your furnace to accommodate the upgrade. Otherwise you could end up with cold or hot spots in your house, frozen coils in summer or a complete shutdown. So before you buy that higher MERV filter, contact a professional to review your whole system so you make the right decisions.

Replacement frequency

How often you need to replace your filter depends on multiple factors, including the obvious ones (pets, allergies, how dusty your area is). It also depends on the filter itself. Higher rated filters that capture more particles will need more frequent replacement. If you choose an upgraded filter, keep this in mind so you don’t let too much time pass between replacements.
