Update from the President & CEO:

Friends of the Gateway Region,

Last month, we gathered for our Annual Meeting and celebrated our belief in possibility and in writing new chapters together. As we look ahead to America’s 250th anniversary, we’re reminded that Virginia – and communities like Petersburg, where we met – helped shape the nation’s founding. That same spirit of resilience and reinvention continues to define our region today.

Virginia’s Gateway Region is on the rise. You can see it in Petersburg’s resurgence, in new investments across our counties, and in the growing interest from companies looking for a place to build and thrive. With our strategic location, strong infrastructure, development-ready sites and a workforce pipeline supported by our partners, the momentum is real – and building.

During that meeting, we also shared our new five-year strategic plan, sharpening our focus on six key sectors where we have the greatest opportunity to lead: advanced manufacturing, logistics and distribution, future technology, energy, wood products and cold storage. These industries reflect who we are and what we do best – making things and moving things – while positioning us for the future.

None of this happens alone. Our strength lies in the alignment across this region, among local governments, investors and partners working together with a shared purpose. That collaboration drives results and helps us compete for the next generation of jobs and investment.

The next chapter of Virginia’s Gateway Region is already being written. I encourage you to read the full recap of our Annual Meeting and learn more about where we’re headed next.

Mapping Virginia’s Life Sciences Ecosystem

Virginia’s life sciences ecosystem continues to expand — and the Petersburg pharmaceutical cluster serves as an anchor. This Virginia Economic Development Partnership map illustrates the growing network of companies, research institutions and innovation hubs across the state. Within that landscape, the Gateway Region plays an important role. Investments from Phlow, Civica Rx and Novo Nordisk have been instrumental in establishing a nationally significant pharmaceutical manufacturing cluster in and around Petersburg. Together, these organizations are strengthening domestic drug production, advancing supply chain resilience and creating high-quality jobs.

Building a Strong Workforce Starts with Meaningful Career Pathways

Virginia’s new InternshipsVA program announced by Gov. Abigail Spanberger will help employers across the state design and launch high-quality, paid internships. This will allow students to gain real-world experience while strengthening Virginia’s talent pipeline. By connecting students, employers and higher education, InternshipsVA helps keep talent in our region and fuels long-term economic growth.
