April 2022
Update from the President & CEO
Friends of the Gateway Region, Spring is here, and March was another significant month during which VGR took advantage of another opportunity to share our region’s story, regarding the emerging Advanced Pharmaceutical Manufacturing cluster in Petersburg. Over the last several years, this cluster, reinforced with transformative technologies, is rooted in the manufacturing, not discovery, of essential life-saving medicines. Its' foundation is also fixed on small-molecule medicines, as opposed to, say, biologics — which are manufactured using live biologic cells in fermentation and other processes.

In Virginia’s Gateway Region, our strategic partners Civica Rx, Phlow Corporation and AMPAC Fine Chemicals and the VCU College of Engineering's Medicines for All Institute are taking a new approach to this, and it’s called: “Continuous Manufacturing.” The vision of the growing cluster is not only to manufacture active pharmaceutical ingredients using this new manufacturing technology, but to literally reinvent the pharmaceutical supply chain in the United States. Petersburg’s emergence is giving the Old Dominion a chance to attract more companies in the pharmaceutical industry from around the globe to the Gateway Region. We extend thanks to our strategic partners who attended the Virginia Economic Developers Association’s Spring 2022 Conference:

Robby Demeria, Chief of Staff at Phlow Corporation and the Commonwealth’s former Deputy Secretary of Commerce & Trade; Elso DiFranco, Executive Director of AMPAC Fine Chemicals; and Elizabeth Creamer, Vice President at the Community College Workforce Alliance — a partner of John Tyler Community College — soon becoming “Brightpoint” — and also a partner of our regional economic development organization.

Lastly, I want to thank U.S. Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner for visiting the VGR Pharma cluster in recent weeks. Their visit reinforces how unique and important this opportunity is — not only for the Gateway Region, but the entire nation.

As always, I’m interested in hearing from you. Should you have any questions, please contact me at: +1 (804) 732-8971 or [email protected].
