Who will take the next ride on the Richie Moore Rocket Ship of Wonder?

As Artemis prepares for its journey back to Earth, I find myself imagining what those astronauts might have created as young people growing up right here on Orcas Island. Would they have built a volcano? Designed a robot? Tracked the sun across the sky?

For the past 26 years, the Funhouse has hosted an all-ages Science Fair that celebrates exactly that kind of curiosity and imagination. From classic experiments to sophisticated projects—like last year’s Rocket Ship winner, Lamai Hon, whose computational model compared solar, wind, and tidal energy—the creativity and brilliance of our young people never cease to amaze.

Each year, student names are added to the whimsical Rocket Ship of Wonder, beautifully crafted by our own Carla Stanley. In my humble opinion, her designs are even cooler than Artemis—perhaps a bit less functional, but far more magical.

We invite the entire community to come celebrate these aspiring minds. The Science Fair is more than an event—it’s a joyful reminder of what’s possible when curiosity is nurtured and imagination is given space to grow.

Spring also brings our 3rd Annual Día de los Niños, a vibrant cultural celebration honoring children and the joy they bring to our lives. Join us for free food, drinks, games, a bounce house, and beautifully handcrafted piñatas—stuffed and ready to be bashed into smithereens for a frenzy of candy and pure delight.

Looking ahead to summer, don’t miss our out-of-this-world FunFest on the last day of school at the Village Green—a beloved community tradition you won’t want to miss.

We often hear the phrase, “It takes a village,” and while that’s true in many places, our community is something extraordinarily special. The Funhouse is proud to be a place of belonging and discovery—where every young person has access to enriching opportunities and caring support during those critical afterschool and summer hours.

All of us at the Funhouse feel deeply privileged to build upon the strength of this village—helping young people grow into resilient, capable individuals who can reach their fullest potential in all of life’s endeavors.

Thank you for keeping us a part of this incredible community.

It takes a Village, and the Funhouse!

PROGRAMS AND OFFERINGS

TECHNOMAGES (5th-8th grade)

Gear up for another 8 weeks of science and tech! In this course we'll be exploring the physics of omnidirectional displays, creating a functional Andotrope with the use of a few handy-dandy smartphones. Where the zoetrope bridged the gap from still life images to bring us motion pictures, the Andotrope builds the bridge to approachable holographic immersion.

TECHNO-MINIS (3rd-5th grade)

Come one and all, join us for a series of classes where you get hands-on experience in building cute little bots! Learn about the physics and the functions of robotics in this introductory exploration of tech. Suitable for grades 5 through 8, no prior experience necessary.

We are excited about music here at the Funhouse, and most recently, our Kids' Chorus was featured at the Music Advocacy Group Benefit Concert, singing "We Are the World" alongside the Orcas Choral Society and backed by Orcas High School Band and Strings.
