Black History Month


This February, participate in a variety of programs featuring work by black artists and creators. Attend a lecture, view artwork at the Library & Cultural Centre, and experience an interactive art session where creativity, music and awareness meet.

Clef Notes to Canvas

February 10, from 1-4 p.m. in the Studio at the Library & Cultural Centre


Join artist Omar Hopkinson for an experiential Black History Month program in partnership with the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton. An afternoon of music and visual arts.


Advance registration is required. No cost. All supplies provided; no experience necessary. Ages 16+.

Miyakah Emon: Explorations of Diasporic Experience Through the Liminal

On display February 5 - March 3 in the

Upper Sisnett Lobby


Explore the complex and meaningful art of Miyakah Emon. Miyakah’s paintings are a direct reflection of their experience as a black Neurodiverse (ADHD and ASD) person. Miyakah’s work is described as a “playground” of various emotions, where chaos and order coexist.

Halton Hills Lecture Series

A Story of Black History Told Through Art with

Francesca Durham

Tuesday, February 6 at 7:30 p.m. (Virtual)


In 2023 the Helson Gallery hosted the sixth annual Emancipation Art Exhibit, to explore and celebrate freedom through the perspectives of Black artists. Join us to learn more about this successful exhibition from Francesca Durham of the Halton Black History Awareness Society, as she relates how the exhibit served as a profound expression of the multifaceted Black experience, and the struggles, triumphs, and aspirations of a diverse community that has been both marginalized and celebrated.

Watercolour Workshop with Rayne Tunley

February 21, from 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the Studio at the Library & Cultural Centre


Learn a variety of watercolour techniques from professional artist Rayne Tunley, whose work is featured in the current exhibition Transatlantic Paper Trail: Diverse Perspectives from Canada, Switzerland, and Germany. In this one-day workshop, artists of all levels will complete a painting using watercolour techniques for wet on wet, colour, and value. Cost is $100, materials not included.

Transatlantic Paper Trail: Diverse Perspectives from Canada, Switzerland, and Germany

Last chance to view this international exchange exhibition exploring diverse perspectives from noted Canadian, German and Swiss artists. The show includes abstract, realism, landscape, and figurative styles.

Mr. Dressup: The Magic of

Make-Believe

February 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the JET


This heartfelt documentary celebrates the life and work of Ernie Coombs, also known as Mr. Dressup, the iconic Canadian children's television personality who encouraged generations of kids to be their best selves.


Presented in partnership with TIFF Film Circuit, its sponsors and supporters, Create Halton Hills and the Halton Hills Public Library. Tickets are $12 and are available for purchase at the JET box office in-person or online.
