Ready or not, here we go into 2021! At the Assistance League of Hawaii time marches on as well. Our programs continue to adapt to the times. There are many opportunities for you to be involved.
At the next Regular Meeting on January 13, we will be electing a new Nominating Committee to seek out our next year's leaders. Perhaps you would like to be in that group that will shape next year's activities and events! Nominating meetings will be virtual, by phone or in person ---, wherever you feel most comfortable. Please consider joining in this committee to help shape our year to come.
Also please consider a board position or program committee chair for this next year. Do not be afraid because you “don’t know what to do”. We have notebooks for each job with detailed descriptions of what to do each month and a great group of members, many of whom have done these jobs in the past. No one will let you fail. We just can’t count on the “same old” people to make things happen. Please dig deep and see what time you can offer our organization this next year.

Time to Develop a New Slate of Officers |
|
With the New Year, it’s time to develop the slate of Officers for the 2021-2022 Board of Directors. This month, the Nominating Committee shall be electing the following:
- 2 members and 1 alternate by and from the Board
- 3 members and 1 alternate by and from the voting membership.
The chairman and vice chairman shall be elected by and from the Nominating Committee.
No member shall be eligible to serve 2 consecutive years. Members of the Jan. 2020 Nominating committee were:

At the January meetings, Assistant League of Hawaii President Mary Monohon will ask the Board and members to suggest names to be placed on the Nominating Committee. Soon after, an email vote shall be conducted during a specified time period to elect the new Nominating Committee.
The Parliamentarian shall call the first meeting of the new Nominating Committee.
The Slate of Nominees for the Board shall be submitted to the membership in March, giving at least one month prior to the election meeting in April, 2021.

Aloha For Hawaii Charities
Until January 20th
Friends of Hawaii Charities donates money generated from the Sony Open every year. Because of the pandemic, they have created a fundraiser for non-profits called Aloha for Hawaii Charities. Your donation is tax deductible as it all comes back to the Assistance League, and if we reach $1000 threshold your donation will be multiplied!

Remember to keep a can, jar, or “umbrella” cover like I use to collect all your loose coins. You can drop that off your coins at the Thrift Shop or if you need to call or text me at 760-831-5012 or email me at cljones888@gmail.com, and I can come by and pick your collection up!

Making the Best of It
As a Strategic Planner, I can't help but think of all the positive outcomes we saw in 2020. We learned how to take a difficult situation and make the best of it. In 2021 part of our evaluation process in March will be to take a look at all that was achieved - we managed to reach many of our goals by adjusting our strategies and coming up with contingency plans.
We want to hear about these positive outcomes not only from all the Chairs and Committees, but also from each of you - how has the pandemic changed the way you view Assistance League Hawaii and volunteering? How have you continued to help us achieve our goals? We know many of you prefer to stay away from the public right now and that is totally understandable. However, many of you have stories about what you have been able to do from home, etc. to make a difference - for example, Sandra Nada recently brought in a big box of beautiful hand-made Christmas Cards to sell in the Thrift Shop. Our customers loved them! This is just one of the many ways you have made, and will continue to make, a difference in the lives of the children and families of Hawaii!
A big thank you to all our volunteers for being flexible and willing to adapt to a different way of volunteering!

Book Donation to
Kahauiki Village Children
|
|
|
|
In the spirit of the holiday season and reading, Assistance League of Hawaii was able to donate books to all the pre-school children children at Kahau'iki Village. Some were in school and some helped at home. They greeted me at the gate with bright shining faces and singing the popular Christmas song, “Jingle Bells”.
We hope we all will be able to get back to tutoring and the library after the spring break this year. Wishing the New Year will bring Joy and Smiles to us all!

Outreach Committee Help UH
Ag and Human Resources
Assistance League of Hawaii was recently contacted by Jessica Radovich of CTAHR (College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources) at UH Manoa for help with their college students. Before COVID, their students earned their money to support themselves by working at farms. Since the farm program has not been happening this past semester, the students are in need of help.
The committee for Outreach met and approved a one-time expenditure of $1500. Chairperson Miho Teipel and Peggy Monell will be using the funds to buy non-perishable foods for the student food closet in early January. If you are interested in helping out in this endeavor, please contact them directly.

Creating a New Presentation for
ACTION Week
The Marketing Committee is busy working on finalizing a new presentation for the upper grade elementary students titled “Sustaining Hawaii’s Environment for Your Future”. Due to COVID-19, the OWL Program where Assistance League of Hawaii volunteers go on the road to visit Hawaii schools is not possible. This marketing presentation will take on a virtual form through videos, online worksheets and evaluations.
Students will learn about the importance of the “3 E’s” - Extinct, Endangered and Endemic” and focuses on endemic plants and animals that have gone extinct or are endangered in Hawaii. These include wildlife such as the Nene Hawaiian Goose, Opeapea (Hawaiian Hoary Bat), the Hawaiian Monk Seal and the Maui Silversword.

Your Monthly Service Hours
Thank you for your diligence in submitting your service hours every month. It is very important for National Assistance League use and to demonstrate the good work that we do to our donors. Please send your hours to me at the end of every month so I can enter them onto the spreadsheet. Only the total is necessary. For those of you who worked during the summer and forgot to give them to me, please include those. Let me know if you need assistance in submitting the hours.
