Whether you are new or returning to Ohio State, we are delighted to welcome you to the Autumn 2018 semester and to the College of Arts and Sciences!  With over 80 majors and 100 minors, we invite you to explore, to question and to create in innovative ways. You will not only uncover the many benefits of a large and diverse university, but also forge life-long friendships that emerge from taking part in the smaller groups that make up our college community. The Center for Career and Professional Success recognizes that you, your family and your professional champions want to see you be successful now and beyond your time at Ohio State. In order to support your next professional step, Career Success is changing its services to support you at any stage in your decision making process. Whether you're in the discovery or search phase, you'll notice new initiatives that will give you insights or connections based on career interests.   New signature programs include:
  • New Career Technologies - Starting this fall, you can activate your career search by utilizing Handshake! This new career management tool uses machine-learning to push out opportunities that are based on your interests. Simply log in, get your profile to 100% and upload your resume to get started.
  • Life Beyond Degree - Based on your major, we connect you with dynamic alumni from your department. Their stories challenge the stereotypical notion that major = career.
  • Career Connections - As you start to develop your career interests, look out for various networking engagements that get you connected with professionals in the field. 
  • ASC on the Road - Not enough time to connect with a career coach in Denney Hall? No worries. Our coaches travel to various locations across the College. Effective September. 4th, you can view locations for Express Career Coaching in Handshake and schedule a time and location that works best for you. 
  • Coffee Chats with a Professional Champion - Need a jumpstart to your career? Look out for monthly career chats with professionals spanning various industries. 
The College of Arts and Sciences is excited to bring these signature programs to you and continues to be responsive to your professional development. Not only are we facilitating programs that get you connected, but we're expanding our team to include more career coaches and industry specialists. We encourage you to not only visit Career Success early and often, but also take advantage of all virtual resources and technology.
Starting Out Strong - Resources to Help You Succeed

Are you in a class that you think may be challenging?  If so, there are numerous resources to help you succeed.  For example, you can receive free help with writing, math, statistics and chemistry courses.  For information on tutoring in these and other areas, as well as many additional university resources that are here to support you throughout your enrollment, click on resources (bookmark this page).  For academic support and tutoring resources, click on that heading. 
Writing Help
Need help with a writing assignment?  The Writing Center, part of the Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing (CSTW) , offers free help at any stage of the writing process.  They can help you with research papers, lab reports, STEP proposals, team projects and more. Students may work with a trained consultant by appointment, on a walk-in basis, through online sessions, or through weekly writing group support . The Center also maintains resources to help you with common writing challenges from constructing a thesis statement to correcting common writing errors.  Individual writing support.   Writing resources .
Math and Statistics Help
Do you expect to need help with a math or statistics course?  Get yourself on the right track early. The Mathematics and Statistics Learning Center (MSLC) provides free support to students in many math and statistics courses.  In addition, they provide online resources, practice exams, workshops and exam reviews for most of the large enrollment mathematics courses.  For more information visit:   Math and Statistics Learning Center.
Student Organization Highlight - Join Arts and Sciences Student Council
Looking for a student organization?  The Arts and Sciences Student Council (ASCSC) is open to all undergraduate students. ASCSC focuses on building community among arts and sciences students and connecting with the college through academic, social and service activities. They host free and informal "Meet the Prof" faculty dinners as well as an annual Ohio State Graduate and Professional School Fair that attracts hundreds of Ohio State students. They administer annual teaching awards and also serve as student representatives on several college committees.  Meetings are held most Wednesdays at 5:30 in the Ohio Union.  All arts and sciences majors are welcome!
The first meeting will be Wednesday, August 22 at 5:30 p.m. in the Interfaith Prayer & Reflection Room of the Ohio Union.  If you're unable to attend, come to a future meeting.  For meeting locations and more about ASCSC, click here.

2018 Ohio State University Career and Internship Fair
Career and Internship Fair Banner
Attend Ohio State's university-wide Career and Internship Fair. Open to all students across all majors, campuses, programs and degree levels. Update your resume, dress to impress, meet with some of the nation's top employers and have a free professional headshot taken. Prior to the Fair, there will be several preparatory workshops to help you get ready. You may also visit the Center for Career and Professional Success for help preparing for the Fair. Brought to you by Buckeye Careers and the Office of Student Life.
Professional dress is required. Current students should bring a BuckID for entry; there is no pre-registration required. More info.

Department of Molecular Genetics Open House
MG 5797 education abroad class in Norway.
Join faculty and current majors from the Department of Molecular Genetics (MG) to learn about research, funding opportunities and the wide array of career opportunities open to MG majors. View demonstrations on the various molecular genetics model organisms and specialized instrumentation used in their research. Talk with undergraduates who are doing research in their labs. Enjoy snacks while you learn how the MG program can prepare you for graduate programs, medical school, or a career in public health, genetic counseling, research or many other career paths. All are welcome regardless of declared major!

Theatre Auditions - Open to All Students

The Department of Theatre welcomes and encourages diverse casting opportunities. All Ohio State students in good academic standing are welcome to audition. You do not need to be a theatre major or minor to participate. Autumn semester productions include: Twelfth Night; or, What You Will, Michael von Siebenburg Melts Through the Floorboards, Legally Blonde the Musical, InterACT, and the Lab Series. School of Music Ensemble Opportunities - Open to Non-Majors
Buckeye Flute Ensemble Members
The School of Music has ensemble opportunities for non-majors. Play an instrument? Love to sing? They have orchestras, bands, choirs, jazz and more. Some groups don't require an audition and most offer variable credit hours so that you can participate without exceeding 18 hours/semester.  For more info, visit School of Music Ensembles.

Autumn Undergraduate Research Festival
The 2018 Autumn Undergraduate Research Festival will include multiple poster and oral presentation sessions. Students graduating in Autumn 2018 or Spring 2019 will have the opportunity to participate a 3-Minute Thesis Competition. Students who have never conducted research or assisted in a research project will have the opportunity to pitch a new research or creative project idea during the Buck Tank session. Presented by the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry. Read more.

Stay Safe Living Off Campus
Any student renting property in the University District can request a free 20-minute home walk-through.  Student Life and Columbus Division of Fire representatives will assess the property, offer free safety devices, discuss proactive safety and security strategies, and answer your questions.  Schedule online  here . To help increase safety in your neighborhood, off-campus students are encouraged to get to know your off-campus Community Ambassador  who will help you have a fun and safe off-campus experience. For more resources, visit Off-Campus and Commuter Student Services .

Mirror Lake Restoration Nears Completion
Mirror Lake
The restoration of Mirror Lake returns this historic lake to a more natural and sustainable state.  The area will look more open and there will be more seating with benches, an overlook, a terrace and scarlet Adirondack chairs around the perimeter.  Technology has been upgraded with Wi-Fi access around the lake.  The landscape is now more sustainable and will provide a habitat for pollinators.   Take a look.
