Preparing Your Recyclables
Getting your recyclables ready for their journey to the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is easier than you think! As technology improves, much less preparation is necessary. Whether you have curbside recycling or utilize the Drop-Off sites, the same preparation guidelines apply. Here are a few tips to make sure your recyclables travel through the MRF with ease:
Rinse out any items that contain bits of food and empty containers of all liquid. This not only keeps the rest of the load from being contaminated, but also keeps odors and pest problems at a minimum. Examples of items that could be rinsed out include condiment bottles and jars, plastic containers of leftovers, and beverage containers.
No need to fully wash your recyclables with soap - we're not looking for perfection! If possible, allow your recyclables to dry before placing them in the bin to prevent water from pooling at the bottom.
Please do not bag your recyclables! Bags are not opened at the facility, which means bagged recyclables do not make it to the sorting process. Additionally, plastic bags get caught in the machinery, leading to slower sorting and equipment downtime. By keeping your recyclables loose, you're keeping them easily identifiable and easily sortable.
Keep the caps on your bottles and containers, and plastic/paper labels do not need to be removed. Newspapers and cardboard do not need to be bundled or tied together, but flattening your cardboard boxes does allow for more space in your cart.
Thanks for properly preparing your recyclables! Still have questions about what's accepted with RRRASOC? Download our Recycling Guidelines, which have both preparation instructions and acceptable/unacceptable items listed.
