Update from the President & CEO:

Friends of the Gateway Region,

America's 250th birthday gives us a chance to celebrate our past while looking ahead to the future. That's the inspiration behind VGR250, our new campaign highlighting how Virginia's Gateway Region has helped shape the Commonwealth's economy for generations – and why those same strengths continue to position us for growth today.

We’re spotlighting each of our nine localities through stories that connect history with modern opportunity. We aren’t simply looking back at where we've been. We’re showcasing that the assets attracting investment today – our strategic location, transportation network, natural resources and resilient workforce – have been creating opportunity for centuries.

We've already launched the series with Petersburg, where the movement of goods, people and ideas has defined the city since long before America's founding. The waterways, railroads and transportation corridors that fueled commerce generations ago continue to support today's logistics, manufacturing and distribution industries.

As the campaign continues, we'll share more stories – and a few creative ways to reconnect with our region's remarkable heritage. While the products have evolved from timber and agriculture to pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing and automated production, the foundation hasn't changed. Virginia's Gateway Region remains a place where strong infrastructure, strategic connectivity and hardworking people create lasting competitive advantages.

The roots of our region run deep. They tell a story of resilience, innovation and adaptability, which are qualities that continue to shape our economy 250 years later. We hope you'll join us as we celebrate the people, places and industries that built this region – and those leading it into the future.

Commentary: Infrastructure Critical to Powering Our Economy

What does it take to keep Virginia's economic momentum moving forward? According to VGR President & CEO Keith Boswell, it starts with the infrastructure that powers our economy.

In a new op-ed in Cardinal News, Boswell outlines why continued investment in Virginia's electric grid is critical — not only for business attraction, but for supporting existing employers, strengthening manufacturing, preparing sites for development and ensuring communities across the Commonwealth are positioned to compete for future investment.

Reliable energy infrastructure isn't simply a utility issue. It's an economic development imperative.

The magazine recognized the Virginia Talent Accelerator Program for its success in delivering workforce training to new and expanding companies.

The Talent Accelerator Program played a pivotal role in the spring announcement that Jabil is building a manufacturing facility in Prince George County, creating 352 new jobs and producing critical power distribution equipment for Siemens. Companies today need to recruit, train and retain the workforce required to operate at scale - and the Talent Accelerator provides customized recruitment and training support to do just that. In the process, it gives Virginia a significant competitive advantage. (Read More)

Seeing Forestry Industry Up Close to Help Support its Growth

Last month, the VGR team joined Terry Godwin for a tour of Franklin Lumber's sawmill, gaining firsthand insight into the opportunities and challenges facing Virginia's forestry sector. Forestry is the state's third-largest private industry, contributing more than $23 billion annually and supporting more than 108,000 jobs.

As Virginia advances new initiatives to strengthen its wood products industry, we're committed to understanding what companies need to grow. Combined with VGR's multimodal transportation network - including rail, access to Interstates 95 and 85, and Route 460 to the Port of Virginia - our region is well positioned to support the next generation of forestry and wood products investment.

Local Partnerships Shape Region’s Competitive Advantages

Maj. Gen. Sean P. Davis of Fort Lee hosted Virginia’s Gateway Region and Prince George County leaders for an evening focused on collaboration and shared priorities. U.S. Army Fort Lee is a significant economic asset as it supports thousands of jobs and serves as the military branch's premier sustainment and logistics center. Continued collaboration between military, local government and regional economic development leaders helps strengthen readiness, support business growth and reinforce the region’s long-term competitiveness.
