7 Things in Your Kitchen That Are Grossing Out Potential Buyers

Once upon a time, my husband and I toured an adorable home for sale in a bucolic New Jersey town. We were thrilled when we walked thro ugh the front door. But that feeling dissipated quickly once we entered the kitchen.  At least, I think it was a kitchen. There was a sink.
The rest was indistinguishable due to the sheer volume of stuff-boxes, newspapers, empty cans, and dirty dishes. As we picked our way to the adjoining  li ving roo m, we were forced to squeeze past a sullen teenager, who'd apparently just rolled out of bed and was slurping what appeared to be a bowl of milk.

Blue in all its forms is a perennial favorite (we love deep shades of indigo for upholstering a couch or splashed on kitchen cabinetry), but a bright, lobster-inspired shade of red just might be the year's "it" hue.

Southern-Style Two-Squash Casserole

Where to start with a bumper zucchini crop? With a Southern classic-squash casserole. Savannah, Georgia's Dora Charles, author of  A Real Southern Cook In Her Savannah Kitchen, discovered that two squashes, zucchini and good ol' yellow .
Using both zucchini and yellow squash gives this version of the classic more color, texture, and flavor. If the yellow squash are large at the bottom, cut the necks into rounds, but cut the bulbous bottoms in half or quarters before you slice them, to keep the sizes more uniform. Mixing crushed fried onions into the Ritz cracker topping is a genius move; it adds even more crunch and flavor.
