Great Deals. Greater Purpose.

We’re excited to share that Chattanooga Room in the Inn Thrift Store is officially in progress! This new venture will help support our mission by providing a sustainable income stream for our programs and a welcoming space for the community to shop with purpose.

We’re now accepting donations of household items, furniture, clothing, decor, etc. Your donated goods go directly toward supporting women and children experiencing homelessness.

Want to help?

Donations can be dropped off in the back of our space on Old Ringgold Road. Every item you give helps us move one step closer to opening the doors and changing lives.

Volunteers are welcome as well! Volunteer on YOUR schedule; weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or sporadic!

Building Understanding: CRITI Staff Completes Trauma-Informed Care Training

Our staff took part in our annual trauma-informed care training with Chattanooga Hamilton County Family Justice Center.

We explored what we Know, what we Want to know, and what we Learned about trauma. The KWL chart in the photo shows our thoughts from understanding fight, flight, freeze responses to asking how trauma affects the brain.

One meaningful activity was the “three-cup” scenario: three people each had a different drink (coffee, orange juice, and water), but were all given the same brand peppermint and asked to sip their drink. Each had a different experience with it because of the drink they originally had. It was a powerful reminder that even when people go through the same thing, their past experiences shape how they respond.

Training like this matters because trauma isn’t always visible. It affects how people think, feel, and behave. By better understanding the impact of trauma, we’re able to offer more patient, compassionate, and effective support to the women and children we serve It helps us create a safe, healing environment where trust can grow.

Helping Little Voices Grow: Speech Therapy Begins for CRITI Child

One of our little ones started speech therapy, and our hearts are with her every step of the way. Through a referral to Tennessee Early Intervention, we learned that while she’s meeting all her motor skill milestones, she has a 40% delay in speech. Starting this week, a therapist began working with her right here at the shelter, and that care will continue even after she graduates.

Speech therapy is so important. It helps children express their needs, connect with others, and build confidence. These early skills are the foundation for learning and relationships. Making sure children have access to support like this is part of what we do. Every child deserves the chance to be heard, and we’re grateful she’ll have the help she needs to find her voice.

New Scholarship Invests in Parenting Support Through Positive Discipline Training

We’re thrilled to announce a new scholarship for Michigan State University to attend a class called Positive Discipline for Professional Caregivers. Our Child Advocate, Jessica Brackett, will be attending and learn parent coaching that will benefit all our residents through our Child Advocacy Program!

This course is designed to help caregivers teach children self-control, responsibility, and emotional regulation through connection instead of punishment. When adults are equipped with these tools, it transforms families from the inside out.

This is a powerful investment in the future for the moms in our program and for their children too. We’re so grateful for partners who make healing and growth possible!

CRITI Connects with Community at SETHC Minority Health Fair

Chattanooga Room in the Inn was honored to attend the SETHC Minority Health Fair at the Chattanooga Convention Center.

Our Volunteer Coordinator, Sharon Collins, and Board Member, Krystal Collins, greeted guests and shared opportunities to volunteer with our mission. It was a great day to connect with the community and celebrate the importance of wellness, access, and support.

The health fair offered free screenings, health resources, and valuable information to help families live healthier, safer lives. We’re thankful to the organizers for creating a space where equity and care come together.

Big cheers for one of our resident kiddos who just joined his middle school football team! Sports teach teamwork, build confidence, and keep kids active and focused. For children living in a homeless shelter, these benefits are even more important because they provide a sense of normalcy, belonging, and hope for the future. We’re proud to see him tackle this new chapter!

A new journey begins! One of our residents started her housing application in July with CRITI’s full support, guiding her every step of the way.

Once approved, this means stability, safety, and a fresh start for her and her family. We’re proud to be part of her path to a brighter future.

Back-to-School Night Brings Supplies, Support, and Fun for CRITI Families

Resident mothers shopped for back-to-school supplies for their kiddos. We were able to provide families with backpacks, pencils, notebooks, and just about everything they need for a successful start to the school year.

While the mamas were shopping, our amazing Child Advocate volunteers kept the kids engaged with a variety of fun activities, including playground time, chalk art, a basketball game, gardening, and even grilling! We grilled freshly picked veggies to explore different ways vegetables can be prepared, and how cooking techniques can completely change their taste.

CRITI Joins United Way Partner Breakfast to Strengthen Community Connections

Gina Moss, Case Manager, and Executive Director, Taylor Hixson attended the United Way of Greater Chattanooga partner breakfast to connect and collaborate with other local nonprofits.
