WORSHIP AT WESLEY

A Note from Pastor Jeff

Travleing the Rough Road

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith. (Hebrews 12:1,2a, ESV)

We should never choose our paths simply because they seem the easiest path to travel. We should choose the paths that we travel because of a sense of faithfulness and calling to God. Ease, comfort, security, and familiarity should never be our guiding principles in life’s choices, but rather a desire to passionately follow the Crucified Lamb in obedience and faithful courage. We shouldn’t shy away from the road less traveled because it might be challenging.

Sometimes we choose our path and sometimes the path is chosen for us. Whether the journey is smooth or bumpy, short or long, easy or hard, we travel with the assurance that we can "run the race with endurance” (Hebrews 12:1). As the author of Hebrews told us, “we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews12:1). In Hebrews 11, this cloud is depicted as the great saints who have gone before us. Hebrews 11 is a list of those great saints of history who have faced danger, adversity, misunderstanding, and death because of the convictions of their faith. Abel, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Rahab, Gideon, Barak, Samson, David, and Samuel are among those named in this Hall of Faithful Ones. Everyone on the list chose the path less traveled and paid a price for their faithfulness. They all stood out from the crowd in their age and culture because of their convictions about God. They were all misunderstood and ridiculed. We are surrounded by this cloud of witnesses who are eager if we will serve the present age faithfully. Since 1856, our congregation has traveled many paths, some easy, some difficult.

We have been on an interesting, challenging journey of discernment and decision-making as a congregation for the last several months. By the end of this year, 6,000-7,000 congregations will have chosen to leave our present denomination. We wanted to be intentional about our decision. We did not choose the journey because we thought it would be easy. Part of the journey was chosen for us. We don’t get to choose the age in which we live. Our faith has been tried, tested, and evaluated. But God continues to show himself faithful to our wonderful congregation. As John Wesley famously said, “Best of all, God is with us!” God has brought amazing growth and grace, blessings, and signs of favor, to our journey. God uses everything we encounter on life’s journey to conform us to the image of Jesus Christ. Nothing is wasted.

We continue to travel together with faithful courage and conviction, love and truth, and the presence of the Living Christ. We are a Presence-based congregation that seeks to transform our community and our world with the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The next step in our church’s journey will be a congregational vote on Sunday, August 27 at 5:30 pm. This is just the next step in a long journey that our congregation has traveled since 1856. This next step, though important, is but the next step in our journey. As always, life is the process of building a bridge while walking on it. Like those who have gone before us, we continue to build our bridge to the future. Regardless of the outcome of the vote, the journey will continue. We will continue to live a life of faithful courage and obedience to Jesus Christ. Forward we go, never seeking to simply choose the easiest path. We will continue to create a future that is worthy of our past.

With Confidence in Christ,

Pastor Jeff

Card Ministry

Snail Mail rocks, especially when it comes to cards. So spread some joy as part of the Caring Card Crew! Join us every second Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Circle View Room as we discuss current prayer concerns, and make plans to send cards to our Wesley Memorial family. You'll choose names from the prayer list and directory, and during the month send a card to those you've selected. Nothing is required at this meeting except a heart for making someone smile! There's no registration needed, either. Simply come as you can and know that you're bringing a smile to many in our congregation. Our next meeting with be Tuesday, August 8th.

Funeral Ushers Needed

WE INVITE YOU to join the Funeral Ushers Volunteer Group! As many of you know, Wesley Memorial provides the facilities for funeral accommodations for our members and their family members upon request. A lot of work goes into arranging a successful gathering and we couldn’t do it without our volunteers. Please reach out to Isabel Cruz Valencia at 336-812-4808 or via email at [email protected]. She will be happy to answer any questions and will appreciate anyone willing to answer the calling!

Looking for Ushers

We are looking for 4-5 ushers for the 11 o’clock service. This is a great way to meet new people and serve our church. If you are interested, please contact Edwin Bass at 336-880-2331.

Baptism Day – Sunday, September 10th

We have had many people in our congregation inquire about baptism. To help with this exciting development, we are offering a baptism day on Sunday, September 10. There will also be an opportunity for individuals to reaffirm their baptism. Please sign up ahead of time at the following link so that a Pastor may be in touch with you to further discuss the meaning of baptism in your spiritual life.

This is open to children up to any age adults. We will have a great celebration on the front lawn after the 11 a.m. worship service on Sept. 10. To sign up, visit wesleymemorial.org/baptism. Sign up by August 31. Email [email protected] with any questions.

Disciple Bible Study is Back!

Disciple Bible Study, which has changed millions of lives across the country and around the world, will be available again at Wesley Memorial this fall.

Wesley member Tucker Mitchell will be leading another session of the Disciple I course, Thursday evenings, beginning Sept. 21.

Disciple I is the foundational class in the internationally acclaimed Disciple series. Participants read approximately two-thirds of the Bible during the 30-plus week course and explore the rich meaning of the scriptures through weekly classes featuring lectures and lively discussions.

More importantly, Disciple participants engage the word in the company of an intimate group of fellow believers. In this setting lasting relationships are formed that enhance both lives and faith.

There are no prerequisites for joining this Disciple I class other than a yearning for a deeper faith and a better understanding of the word of God. Class members typically bring vastly different backgrounds in bible study to the class. Last year’s class at Wesley included individuals who had never participated in an in-depth Bible study, alongside veterans of previous Disciple classes.

The class is open to adults of all ages and is not limited to members of Wesley Memorial.

Tucker Mitchell and his wife Cindy moved to High Point two years ago. He has led Disciple Bible for more than 25 years. Last year, he led a group of 11 committed Disciples through the Disciple 1 class as Wesley renewed its participation with the series following a brief hiatus.

The Walk to Emmaus

The Walk to Emmaus is a three-day retreat held twice a year by the Piedmont Emmaus

Community. It is sponsored by the Upper Room of the United Methodist Church. It runs from

Thursday night to Sunday afternoon. It is an uplifting, energizing, and wonderful time away

from the day-to-day worries that tend to drown out God. The dates for the Men’s Walk for this

fall are Sept. 14-17 and the Women’s Walk is from Sept. 21-24. The retreat looks in depth at a

variety of topics related to basic Christian theology. It is a very spiritual and renewing

Wesley Memorial School

Building Community in the Wesley Memorial School

At Wesley Memorial School we are finding new and meaningful ways to bring fellowship, ministry, partnership and building relationships into our school family, Wesley Memorial Church, and the Community.

It’s the little things that help create an atmosphere that is nurturing, learning, growing, next steps of development, and following Gods commandment to Love One Another. We have created opportunities in the classrooms for children to make new friends, bond with teachers, and feel safe. It is our goal to also help parents meet one another and share in parenting experiences. It is a family “FEEL” that we are creating in the hallways, on campus, and in our community.

Please take a look at our newsletter and enjoy all the fabulous pictures that speak LOUDER than these words…

1 Corinthians 12:14

For the body does not consist of one member but of many.

The body of Christ, or the people that are the whole of humanity, are a team. The body is not supported

by one person, but by all of us. We are one, we are strongest working together in unity. Teamwork is the key to living life in harmony, so that we can do God's will.

Retirement of Dawn Miller

The Wesley Memorial School would like to share our heartfelt appreciation and love for Dawn Miller who has served 18 years as a lead kindergarten teacher. Dawn has accepted a second-grade lead position at the Winston-Salem Christian School. She will begin her new adventure this fall. For now, we still have some precious time with Dawn as she continues to teach in the WMS Summer Camp. Dawn has blessed each student, family, and co-worker through her passion to nurture, teach, and build relationships. Her kind and gentle spirit, her joy and laughter, her willingness to go above and beyond the norm, her creative mind, her beautiful faith, her knowledge to educate especially in STEAM, and her God-given gifts and talents will be greatly missed. It is not goodbye but see you soon as Dawn and her husband Chad are active members of Wesley Memorial UMC.

Note from Dawn

I have always said I would be at WMS until they kicked me out. But you know what happens when you tell God YOUR plans! He says, "Here, hold my tea!"

I have genuinely loved my time here at Wesley Memorial School. The leadership, my co-workers, and the families I have served have meant the world to me. I could not have asked for a more encouraging and supportive place to send my children to school as well as work. It never felt like a job! I loved walking into school each day, loving on the children placed into my care and being able to share Christ's love with them. So, thank you WMS for helping me grow into the teacher, friend, parent, and leader God has led me to be. Although I am looking forward to this new adventure, I will never forget my time with you all!

Missions

Our Commitment to Open Door Ministries

Open Door Ministries provides critical services in our community for individuals and families experiencing homelessness and/or food insecurity. Wesley Memorial has provided long-time financial and volunteer aid in support of their assistance programs. The combination of price increases on food and essential services along with a loss of Covid stimulus funds has hit many living near the poverty line very hard during the past year. Open Door has seen an increase of over 40% in the number of daily meals being served (over 7000/month), and a sharp rise in the number of households obtaining staples at their Food Pantry (20+/day). This increase has depleted their supplies of nonperishable items, leaving families with few options.

To help offset this increased demand for Food Pantry items, a collection of nonperishables will be taken here at Wesley, each Communion Sunday going forward. This Sunday (August 6th) will be our first collection, and bins will be placed outside of all three services for your deposits. Presently, the greatest demand is for protein products such as:

— Canned meat (i.e. chicken, tuna, turkey, ham, etc) — Peanut Butter — Beans or Rice & Beans products

Please consider bringing items as you feel led, knowing that your generosity is providing for our neighbors who lack the most basic needs. Thank you.

HorsePower's Fun on the Farm

Come out for a fun day of activities at the HorsePower Therapeutic Riding Center on Saturday, August 19th, and learn how this wonderful organization ministers to youth and veterans through skills learned in horseback riding. You will also have a chance to meet Cassie, the horse that Wesley Memorial sponsors. Horsepower is one of the many missions Wesley Memorial supports with your generous financial gifts. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities available at HorsePower - for more information contact Jan Clifford at: [email protected] or 336-931-1424.

Mission Moment: Germaine Pratt Visits Macedonia FRC

The Macedonia Family Resource Center distributed over 400 back to school backpacks loaded with school supplies. This project was made possible by professional football player, Germaine Pratt. He is a graduate of HP Central and NC State who is currently a linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals. Germaine is also a former player in the Macedonia baseball league and has never lost touch with Macedonia. Germaine reached out to Macedonia several weeks ago with the desire to give away backpacks and school supplies to local kids. He understands the importance of the Macedonia Family Resource Center. Over 400 backpacks with school supplies were distributed and over 1000 people were treated to food and ice cream from food trucks. His only request was for there to be no media.

This generosity to give back is truly a testimony to the impact the Macedonia Family Resource Center had on his life. This came from his heart. We love and support Germaine & wish him well on the upcoming season.

Macedonia Family Resource Center Celebrates 20 Years of Service

The Macedonia Family Resource Center was founded when members of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church had a vision of making an impact right here in the High Point community. In 1999, a capital campaign called “God’s Future Church” was initiated to provide funds for renovating our church. During discussions about how this money would be spent, members of our congregation pointed out the importance of investing in our community as well as in our own church. As one member stated, “If we cannot help the kids living in High Point, what good is our church?” The Macedonia neighborhood on the south side of High Point was selected as a possible site for a community resource center, with the primary goal of providing programming and education for underprivileged kids. Wesley Memorial pledged over $1 million to show their support for this endeavor, and a partnership was forged between Wesley Memorial, churches in the Macedonia area, and the city of High Point. Never before had a white church partnered with black churches to make an impact in any community but Wesley Memorial did just that. Members of the church went door-to-door, developing relationships with people who lived in the community. They ask how we can make a difference.

The Macedonia Family Resource Center came to a reality in 2003. The center now stands at 23,000 ft.² with 75% of the area devoted to educational programming for children from ages one to 12. The rest of the center is dedicated to serving the members of the Macedonia community. Services include hot meals for our seniors, a food pantry, a community vegetable garden, a free computer area, a library, a music room, a game room, and much more. Macedonia is known for its youth baseball program and elite dance team but also offers other programs such as the police mentoring program which aligns at-risk boys and girls with the High Point police department. Dell McCormick has been the Executive Director at Macedonia for over 15 years. He understands the needs of the community. Likewise, the community respects him and has confidence in him.

A 20th-anniversary celebration is scheduled for Friday, November 3 at the High Point Country Club. Please mark your calendar and come celebrate 20 years of supporting the Macedonia community. More information to follow.

The Macedonia mission statement covers its purpose well: “ To Empower All People By Enriching Their Spiritual, Social, and Family Lives in God’s Love.

The Macedonia Family Resource Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which means that all donations made to the center are tax deductible. By investing in the Macedonia Family Resource Center, donors are making a tangible difference in the community, empowering individuals to overcome challenges, and fostering a path towards self-sufficiency and personal growth. Your Easter Offering at Work

As of July 2023, clean water has been restored and the Good Samaritan Clinic has been repaired and operational providing services for the Batae 7 community in the Dominican Republic. This project was completed ahead of schedule. Clean water will enable the medical clinic to provide the needed care for these people and provide clean drinking water for the community of approximately 8,000 people. As the hands and feet of Christ, our church has made a tremendous difference for the people living in this area. Thank you to the congregation at Wesley Memorial! We are blessed with a wonderful and caring church.

Mission Opportunity

Wesley Memorial will serve the Good Samaritan Medical Clinic in Batey 7 located in the Dominican Republic through future mission trips to this area. Dr. Dale Williams will be leading a team from November 4th thru 11th. This will be a surgical team of 15 to 18 people. The surgeons have been recruited but are still in need of nurses and a few who can be helpers to complete this mission team. Please contact the church office (336-884-2204) to put your name on a list of those interested in this opportunity.

This is one more example of the great heart of our Wesley Memorial family, reaching out in caring ways as Jesus taught us to do. Thank you all for stepping up and making a difference.

Fairview Elementary Community Catch-Up

As Fairview Elementary plans for the start of the school year, they are having a community catch-up meeting on Monday, August 14th to engage community partners in the school's process.

Missions Grant Approvals

During the first half of 2023, your Local Missions and Community Impact Committee has approved grant requests from 13 charitable organizations providing a variety of essential outreach services locally, regionally, and globally. Below you will find a breakdown of these payouts.

In addition, contributions were made in support of mission projects for our youth on two separate occasions, as well as the annual High Point MLK Breakfast. These grant approvals total $37,578. As a reminder, one of the criteria for grant recipients is the availability of volunteer opportunities. Any of the organizations listed above would welcome your volunteer involvement.

Your Missions Team prioritizes the responsible stewardship of your financial gifts as a way to manifest Wesley Memorial’s mission statement in the local community and beyond. Thank you for your generosity!"

Partnerships

Wesley Memorial is the home to one of the 13 satellite offices to Sanctuary Counseling Group which provides mental health counseling and pastoral counseling. Their mission is to walk with clients as they journey towards the healing of their minds, hearts, and souls.
