Sport History Spotlight:
A Classic “Aiken”
This month’s Platinum Performance/USHJA International Hunter Derby Championship is built on hunting traditions brought into the show ring: “Obstacles must simulate those reminiscent of the hunt field and the course should offer a variety of jumps with different appearances such as: natural post and rail, stone wall, white board fence or gate, coop, aiken, hedge, oxer, brush, logs, natural foliage. Natural obstacles such as banks and ditches are encouraged.”
Here’s a look back to a classic “aiken,” a fence made of heavy rails with a wide spread of brush piled in front, asking the horse to jump the spread of the brush and to be careful over the rail. Kenny Wheeler and Isgilde cleared the aiken at Devon beautifully in 1963 on their way to the Working Hunter Championship. (The USHJA Wheeler Museum is named for Kenny and Sallie Wheeler.)
