2020 Platinum Performance/USHJA Green Hunter Incentive, International Hunter Derby Championships and AON/USHJA National Championships Cancelled
The USHJA regrets to announce the cancellation of the 2020 Platinum Performance/USHJA Green Hunter Incentive Championships and the Platinum Performance/USHJA International Hunter Derby Championship, scheduled for August 11-15 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, and the AON/USHJA National Championships scheduled for November 16-22 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“The health and safety of our members, staff, volunteers and their families is our priority, and the decision was made by our Board of Directors to cancel these USHJA Championships,” said Mary Babick, USHJA president. “We feel strongly that we must take the necessary steps to help minimize risk and exposure of the COVID-19 virus to ensure our sport can continue in the future. Sport History Spotlight: Sandsablaze—A Horse of Many Talents
In these days of specialization, there are a few hunter derby horses who have transitioned from the jumper ring and some jumpers who get their horse show start in the hunter ring, but it’s rare to see a horse easily switch disciplines.
Buddy Brown’s Sandsablaze, a Thoroughbred (b. 1967, Blazing Count x Sandy Atlas), was not only a successful hunter and international jumper but also had been an equitation finals horse. Brown and Sandsablaze won the 1973 Medal Finals before being selected for the USET and winning the 1974 Dublin Grand Prix, team gold at the 1975 Pan American Games, and team fourth at the 1976 Olympic Games. Then, they returned to the hunter ring with brilliant style for the 1977 Lake Placid Hunter Classic before once again joining the USET to win team gold at the 1979 Pan American Games.
