If you’ve driven through the small hamlet of LeSage on Ohio River Road about 12 miles northeast of Downtown Huntington, chances are you’ve driven by one of the best kept secrets in all of West Virginia. LeSage Natural Water is a division of Green Acres Regional Center Inc., which has been a staple in the community for more than 50 years and was founded with the mission to provide job opportunities to the developmentally disabled. LeSage Natural Water is the only non-profit facility of its kind anywhere in the United States. The operation collects water from an underground aquifer beneath the facility where it is stored. From there the water is filtered, using an advanced four-step process, bottled into 16.9-ounce individual bottles, and 3-gallon and 5-gallon containers, labeled, and packaged for shipment.
LeSage Natural Water is distributed to many places around the state. Recently the company entered into a partnership with Fruth Pharmacy to sell the water at all Fruth Pharmacy stores. LeSage also supplies water for many local area businesses and manufacturing facilities in addition to this LeSage is also the official bottled water supplier for the State of West Virginia.
While the water won the gold medal at the Berkeley Springs international Water Competition, the most prestigious water tasting competition in the world, the most important part about LeSage is its mission. The organization provides work for the developmentally disabled which aids in the overall rehabilitation of some and improves the quality of life for many of its nearly 50 employees. LeSage provides an opportunity for these individuals to work constructively and to have employment which is essential to a healthy and balanced life. Having employment improves the confidence and social skills for many and provides many with an essential purpose.
