Back to School Shopping Tips to Help Save you Time and Money!
Back to School shopping is here! Follow our tips to save time and money on your school shopping.

  1. Go through closets and desks. This will help you determine what you actually need. Are there items in closets that still fit? Do you have left over school supplies from last year? Check those items off your lists.
  2. Create your lists – Just like grocery shopping, if you stick to a list you are less likely to overspend. Lists should be specific: 2 pairs of jeans, 2 boxes of crayons, socks, tennis shoes, dress shoes, etc.
  3. Shop for clothing when needed. To spread out your spending, only shop for the clothing items you will need up front. Temperatures can be warm and mild through October (fingers crossed), so you may not need multiple pairs of long pants/shirts and jackets. Consider purchasing what you will need, then create a “fall” or “winter” school shopping trip. You will be spending the same amount of money, but the costs will be spread out.
  4. Implement the “School Clothes Rule” – Clothing can be expensive, so you of course want it to last longer. Designate certain clothing items to only be worn at school. When the children come home have them change into their “play clothes” –clothes that may be a little worn or items that can get dirty. This will help those expensive items last and look newer longer.
  5. Shops sales and use coupon codes. Sales are amazing! Invest in the Sunday paper and determine where you can get the best deals. If you prefer to shop online, search out coupon codes or sign up for email alerts, which typically alert you to when you receive additional money off your purchase.

Educating Your Adult Children on the Importance of Saving for Retirement.

As a financial advisor, I spend my days helping people plan for and achieve their financial goals. Many of my clients are
parents who, in addition to planning for their own future, care deeply about helping their children find their financial footing
as they enter adulthood. Having spent decades building up  their nest eggs for retirement, they recognize the power of
long-term financial planning and hope their children will capture the same benefits by starting to invest while they are young. Convincing someone just starting in their careers to set aside money for retirement – which to them, may seem like light years away – can be a tough sell. But, initiating the conversation in a respectful and educated manner may eventually compel them to make it a priority. If you’re a parent looking for guidance in this area, consider the following discussion pointers by clicking here.
