August is "New Member" month on WBJC! Since you're getting this newsletter, we know you're already a member. But maybe you know someone who isn't?
We're asking our current members to help us raise awareness that WBJC is a member-funded venture. More than 70% of our operating budget is generated by individuals such as yourself! Underwriting and grants fill in the remainder of those funds, but it's the supporting members who are the bread and butter of this station.
Our membership roster has been shrinking over the past few years, partly because of donor attrition, but also because we've worked hard to limit the amount of on-air pledge drives... pledge drives are the #1 way we get people who are already listening to take the next step and become members. But who really wants to listen to more music-interruption?
Yeah, neither do we.
So throughout the month you'll hear messaging to entice those listeners to become members and Jonathan has even started a new round of composer vignettes called 31 in 31 to motivate them. So if you know someone who's a classical music fan and isn't already member, ask them to join today!
And you can hear 31 in 31 each weekday at 9a, 1pm and 6pm, Saturdays at 9am, Noon and 6pm, and Sundays at 9am, Noon and 7pm. And don't worry, if you miss one, they'll be posted to the website after they've all aired!

The BSO Encore series returns to the airwaves... a bit late!
Due to Jonathan's unintentional delay returning from Italy, BSO Encore will NOT start this weekend. The series will begin on Sunday 8/14.
Sundays at 1pm beginning 8/14, Jonathan Palevsky and Kati Harrison host 10 weeks of fabulous concerts performed by our fantastic hometown orchestra.
Please keep an eye on the website for the upcoming schedule!

Last November, I was feeling very sick, and my son took me to the emergency room at St. Agnes hospital. It turns out I had Multiple Myeloma, which is a form of blood cancer. I began treatments and within a few months went into remission. Now that I am in remission, I am able to get a bone marrow transplant at Johns Hopkins. It is a long procedure, and will take me out of commission for the entire month of July, and the first part of August. Believe me when I tell you that I would much rather be in the studio every morning sharing the world’s greatest music with you, but I need to do this so that I can continue to share that great music with you in the coming years. Abhin, Kati, Jonathan, Dyana and Judith will be covering my shifts at one time or another. I can’t thank them enough for their generosity of spirit. I can’t thank you enough for the support you have showed me over the years. I’m going to be back just as soon as possible. Thanks again, and keep listening!
