The 2023 Building Industry Show is less than one month away, taking place in beautiful San Diego in partnership with BIA San Diego on October 25th and 26th.

Government Affairs

Governmental Affairs and builder advocacy continue to be the primary focus of the Riverside County Chapter. We are engaged with jurisdictions throughout Riverside County on numerous issues. Several updates include:

City of Perris Residential Design Guidelines: The City of Perris is wrapping up work on a new set of residential design guidelines for both single family and multi-family residential developments. The City of Perris reached out to your BIA chapter early and sought our assistance and feedback. The result of the process is guidelines that will benefit BIA members in terms of flexibility and clarity. We thank the City of Perris for the collaboration and partnership.

SCAG Greenprint Status: As you will recall Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) has been working on an online conservation planning tool, in a manner that could invoke new CEQA threats to entitled housing projects. Through the efforts of BIA and others SCAG has created a Technical Advisor Committee (TAC) to address our and likeminded organizations concerns. The new TAC has had its initial meeting and we are encouraged by the early dialogue. We will remain engaged in the process to protect homebuilding in Riverside County and Southern California.

Affordable Housing: Local cities are actively grappling with the continued state-required affordable housing mandates. Unfortunately, those state mandates come without any new funding sources, causing communities to look to the home building industry as the primary funding source via inclusionary housing policies and fees. While we understand the difficult challenge local governments face achieving affordable housing goals, taxing new home buyers to cover those costs will only make homes more expensive and put home ownership out of reach for even more people, making the problem worse. We are currently involved in discussions on new inclusionary housing fee proposals in several cities where our goal remains to make sure the policy has an in-lieu fee option and that the new fee is as low as possible.

Elections 2024: Fall is hear on campaigns are in high-gear for the early March 2024 primary. In March we will see primary elections for the Board of Supervisors and some City Council’s in Riverside County. These primaries will roll into a very busy fall 2024 where nearly every elected body in Riverside County will hold elections. Candidates are beginning to emerge, and we continue to work hard identifying and supporting pro-business, pro-housing candidates.

The Riverside County Chapter will continue to be focused on industry advocacy and keeping Riverside County and our local cities a great place to build much needed housing.
