As part of our environmental monitoring program, a third-party consultant will be conducting routine soil sampling for the presence of beryllium and uranium at several sites in Peterborough, including Prince of Wales Public School on Monaghan Road, on August 6, 2025.

At BWXT in Peterborough, fuel bundles for CANDU reactors are assembled using natural uranium dioxide pellets shipped from BWXT's facility in Toronto, which are placed into zirconium tubes to form the fuel bundle.

Uranium is a naturally occurring, weakly radioactive element, present at low levels in the environment. It can be found in soil and rocks, the water we drink, and the air we breathe. Because uranium is a naturally occurring, low-level radioactive material that exists virtually everywhere, it contributes to what is called “natural background radiation.”



Beryllium is a lightweight but strong metal found in the earth’s crust and can be found in everything from cell phones and airbag sensors to aircraft and pacemakers. Its use is controlled by a regulated manufacturing program that protects the health and safety of employees, the public, and the environment.

As part of our ongoing support for Prince of Wales Public School, BWXT volunteers recently braved the heat to help brighten up the playground.



Employees spent the afternoon refreshing faded lines on the basketball court, four square, track and field area, and more - in addition to painting a new pick-up zone for parents and tic-tac-toe in the kindergarten area.

The fresh paint, along with the garden boxes we recently installed, will help create a more fun, functional, and safe space for students to enjoy when they return to school in the fall.
