PETERBOROUGH COMMUNITY NEWS UPDATE

Hello Peterborough Community,

Summer has arrived at last! June was a busy month for our team, and I'm excited to share what we've been up to. Below you will find more information about our recently updated Indigenous Relations Roadmap and some community engagement highlights.

In mid-June, we had the pleasure of hosting a beading workshop for employees, led by a talented local Métis artist. This workshop provided our employees an opportunity to learn more about Indigenous culture and history through art and storytelling.

As always, please feel free to connect if you have any questions at kedwards2@bwxt.com or 705-698-1479.

Kind regards,

Indigenous Relations Roadmap Update

In July 2024, we introduced an Indigenous Relations Roadmap for our operations in Canada. The roadmap is a leadership guide to advancing Indigenous Truth and Reconciliation across our business efforts in an aligned and meaningful way.

In September 2024 we established BWXT’s Indigenous Relations Roadmap Oversight Committee to oversee the implementation of the Indigenous Relations Roadmap. The committee meets every two months to track progress.

Since the launch of the roadmap, our committee has made progress in many areas including:

  • Continuous updates to our company portal to add learning resources for employees.
  • Launched more comprehensive cultural awareness training for all Canada employees.
  • Coordinated campaigns for National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S), Moosehide Campaign Day, National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day. Social media posts shared.
  • Established the Indigenous Relations Roadmap Oversight Committee, conducting ongoing touchpoint meetings.
  • Identified Communities and Nations of interest.
  • Developing a job posting for a dedicated Indigenous Relations role.
  • Preparing land acknowledgements for all sites.
  • Ongoing meetings and tours with First Nation communities, capacity funding provided.
  • Supporting and promoting community Pow Wow events.
  • Achieved Phase 3 through the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business (CCIB) Partnership Accreditation in Indigenous Relations (PAIR) program.

Recent Community Engagement

Living Well Senior Showcase

On June 18, we attended the Living Well Senior Showcase at the Peterborough Sport & Wellness Centre to meet with community members and share more about what we do in Peterborough. The event had a great turnout and over 150 people stopped by our booth. Many were surprised to learn that the natural uranium fuel bundles we manufacture in Peterborough go on to Power 25% of homes and business in Ontario! We also enjoyed sharing insights about our growing role in nuclear medicine.

Peterborough's Dragon Boat Festival

We made waves at Peterborough's Dragon Boat Festival, where our two BWXT Xtreme Paddlers teams fundraised and raced to support local cancer care. Ahead of the festival, we hosted an employee-led cook-off which, combined with our paddler's fundraising efforts, raised more than $3,400 to support Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC)!

Garden Boxes for Prince of Wales Public School

As part of our continued collaboration with Prince of Wales Public School, we installed the second round of garden boxes late June. Our shop employees manufactured the boxes and our volunteers installed them, pulled weeds from the garden and surrounding area, and picked up garbage around the site. These garden boxes will not just grow plants, but will help enhance student curiosity and sustainability at the school!

BWXT Wins Shifting Gears X-Large Workplace Award

Many of our employees once again participated in the Shifting Gears May Challenge coordinated by GreenUP. This program encourages community members to adopt more environmentally friendly transportation habits throughout the month of May. Our BWXT team logged a total of 5,032 km of alternative transportation for the month (reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 600 kg!). We also won our sixth Shifting Gears X-Large Workplace award!
