TORONTO COMMUNITY NEWS UPDATE

Hello Toronto Community,

As we welcome the colourful landscape of fall, I hope you had a wonderful summer and smooth start to the new school year.

Our team has been busy planning opportunities to connect with community members. Our next event is coming up on September 24 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. in our parking lot at 1025 Lansdowne Avenue.

Here, you can interact with our team, ask questions you may have, and discover how we create the fuel that powers Ontario with clean energy and facilitates the production of life-saving nuclear medicine. We hope you can make it!

Below you will find information about our upcoming annual fall drill and how we are recognizing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

As always, you are welcome to connect with me directly if you have any questions or would like to share feedback. I can be reached at kedwards2@bwxt.com or 705-698-1479.

Kind regards,

Krissy Edwards

October Drill at BWXT Nuclear Energy Canada

This October we will be holding a drill at our facility with local emergency responders to practice our emergency response.

We regularly perform drills to ensure response to an emergency

event is coordinated. All employees are trained on fire prevention measures, emergency situation responses, emergency evacuation routes and their specific responsibilities, and we have a comprehensive emergency response plan in place.

We use multiple tools to communicate drill information to community members in advance, such as mailers, banners and social media. We however do not communicate drill dates or times publicly as that would influence employee response, thereby defeating the purpose of the exercise.

Frequently Asked Questions:

I live nearby. What do I need to do during a drill or an emergency? During a drill or emergency at our facility in Toronto we ask that you keep the entrance clear to ensure first responders are able to easily access the site.

BWXT contemplates all accident scenarios, including low probability events. There are no requirements for the public to shelter in place or evacuate during a drill or emergency due to a release of radiation from our site. No credible accident scenarios from a release of radiation were identified in the Safety Analysis Reports that would require shelter in place or evacuation. Neither site houses a nuclear reactor, but rather natural uranium, which cannot become highly radioactive until it is installed in a nuclear reactor.

How can I contact you during an emergency? You can contact our team by email at questions@bwxt.com or you can call us at 1.855.696.9588.

Honouring the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, observed annually on September 30th, acknowledges the intergenerational trauma and legacy of residential schools.

During the month of September, BWXT's sites across Canada will display Every Child Matters flags to help raise awareness and encourage employees and community members to learn more about the history of First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples. Our Indigenous Relations Committee encourages employees to donate to local Indigenous organizations and wear orange on September 30.

BWXT joined the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business (CCIB) in 2017, demonstrating our commitment to building and sustaining relationships with Indigenous communities where we have operations. BWXT is participating in the CCIB’s Partnership Accreditation in Indigenous Relations (PAIR) certification program and is currently PAIR-Committed.

In 2024, BWXT partnered with Creative Fire, a 100% Indigenous-owned consulting, strategy, communications and creative agency, to develop an Indigenous Relations Roadmap for its operations in Canada. The Roadmap is designed to be an internal guide for leadership to align business efforts in support of Indigenous Truth and Reconciliation and to lay the foundation for future Indigenous Relations work. It contains seven (7) themes, each with their own objectives, recommended actions, metrics of progress, timelines, and accountable owners. A committee was formed to drive Roadmap actions and align progress across BWXT’s operations in Canada. The Roadmap is updated throughout the year to provide more information about the actions and steps taken. At BWXT in Toronto we manufacture ceramic pellets from natural uranium dioxide powder. After pressing, baking, grinding and inspecting the pellets, we send them to our Peterborough facility where they are placed in CANDU® fuel bundles. Both our Peterborough and Toronto facilities are licensed by Canada’s nuclear regulator, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). Approximately 40 people work at BWXT in Toronto in high-value manufacturing positions, engineering and operations support. The pellets manufactured by our employees in Toronto are placed into fuel bundles in Peterborough and go on to power 25% of Ontario!
